2.0 DESCRIPTION OF EXISTING CONDITIONS
2.1 Geology
The 1:100,000 scale Gympie Surface Geological Map 1 indicates that the site is underlain by materials
derived of the early to middle Triassic age Kin Kin Beds, which are described as “commonly cleaved and
commonly kinked mudstone…”. The Australian Stratigraphic Units Database describes the Kin Kin Beds as
“arenite, argillite and phyllite.”

Cuttings exposed an upper profile of highly deformed phyllite that was kinked and cleaved with the rockmass
essentially presenting as a clayey gravel profile. Low strength (or stronger) phyllite was exposed in the
deeper driveway cuts generally exposed in places along the table drain.

                                                                          ;

Text Figure 3: Weathered Phyllite exposed in driveway cuttings

The GD investigation comprised the drilling of two boreholes (designated BH1 and BH2) across the
proposed residence area. The GD boreholes encountered gravelly clay fill to depths of 0.2 m to 0.5 m below
ground level (BGL), then distinctly weathered rock upon which auger drilling refusal was encountered at
depths of 1.1 m to 1.5 m BGL.
GD classified the site Class P but, if not for the site filling, as equivalent to Class M per AS2870.

2.2 Topography
During the site walk-over, topographic features specific to the site were noted, and ground slopes were
recorded using a hand-held clinometer. As shown in Text Figure 4 overleaf, the site featured two distinct hill
crests in the south-western part joined by a ridgeline ‘saddle’. The flanking slopes fell away from the hill
crests in all directions with a series of narrow spurs and broader gully heads dipping into more incised gully
lines below.
