6) System maintenance

6.1 Disinfection

Where effluent is irrigated across the
ground surface, disinfection is considered
necessary and may include chlorine
addition or the use of UV, Ozone or
membrane technology.

6.2 Unit maintenance

To reduce any risk associated with the
Operation of aerobic treatment plants, they
must be maintained regularly by a
registered service agent so that the
discharge criteria for the reclaimed effluent
are satisfied at all times. This maintenance
must be carried out in accordance with the
requirements of the manufacturer and to
the satisfaction of Council.

As part of the quarterly service, sludge and
scum levels should be monitored.

Anaerobic chambers should be desludged
by an approved contractor, as required.

6.3 Maintaining the land
application area

The {and owner or occupier is responsible for
the maintenance of the tand application’
area and should ensure ponding and runoff
from the area does not occur.

The irrigation area requires regular
harvesting (mowing/pruning} and removal
of clippings to ensure that nutrients are
removed from the system and to promote
continued growth, nutrient assimilation
and water uptake. A high level of ground
cover must be maintained at all times to
minimise potential erosion.

The land application area must be inspected
regularly to assess its physical condition. The
most obvious signs of system failure would
be odour or surface ponding of water. Any
irrigation area rectification work is to be
performed by a licensed drainer.
