2.1. Draft Noosa Housing Strategy What is the draft Noosa Housing Strategy? Noosa Council has recognised the Shire as being gripped by a housing crisis, which is having a significant social and economic impact on the community. As part of its commitment to implementing policies that decrease inequity, promote inclusiveness and result in safe, affordable places for people to live, meet and play, Noosa Council endorsed the draft Housing Strategy at a Special Council Meeting on 23 June 2022 which set a clear plan for housing in the shire through to 2041. The draft Housing Strategy was informed by a Housing Needs Assessment, endorsed by Council in December 2021, that provided a comprehensive technical report on the context of housing and households in Noosa Shire. Noosa Council recognises that for the strategy to be successful it will require the support of the Queensland Government as well as community housing providers, private housing providers and developers, as well as the community. To ensure its longevity, the draft strategy provides for regular monitoring and review to ensure its actions and interventions are meeting its objectives and are delivering housing choice, diversity and affordability to meet the current and future needs of the community. Why is the strategy important? Across Noosa, there are more than 140 community members sleeping in caravans, cabins, tents or outside right now – this includes 15 families with children. This, coupled with a tightening property marketing forcing rents to skyrocket and making homes even more unaffordable, will see more and more people forced to leave the community they call home. As part of its commitment to ensuring Noosa remains an inclusive community, Noosa Council, through the draft Housing Strategy, is doing what it can to ensure we can Keep Noosa Home for everyone. 7
