Negotiated Approved Document Fauna Management Plan 16-01-25 OPW26 0033 (As Published)
4.0 FAUNA MANAGEMENT– PRIOR TO CLEARING
4.1 PROTECTION OF VEGETATION/FAUNA HABITAT TO BE RETAINED
Impact to native vegetation outside of the approved clearing area is strictly prohibited in the absence of
additional approval by Council. In order to protect the vegetation located outside of the approved clearing
area, the following measures are required to be implemented prior to vegetation clearing commencing:
The boundaries of the area to be cleared are to be defined with temporary exclusion fencing prior
to the commencement of clearing works. Fencing is to be retained until the conclusion of
operational works activities
Erosion and sediment control measures are to be employed along the downslope interface of the
approved clearing area.
4.2 PRE-CLEARING FAUNA SURVEY
Prior to vegetation clearing commencing, the fauna spotter/catcher is to undertake a preclearing survey
and habitat assessment to locate any fauna species or habitat features that may be present within the
clearing area. Clearing is not to commence until the pre-clearing fauna and habitat assessment has been
completed. The pre-clearing survey shall include:
The identification and inspection of arboreal habitat within the clearing area (such as arboreal
hollows, nests or possum dreys) and/or the actual presence of fauna species within trees
The closure of unoccupied arboreal hollows within trees to be cleared to prevent arboreal fauna
from potentially moving into the hollows during clearing
The identification and inspection of potential terrestrial habitat within the clearing area (such as
termite mounds, and fallen logs) and/or the actual presence of ground dwelling fauna
The identification and relocation of any native beehives. All native beehives of the Genera
Tetragonula (syn Trigona) and/or Austroplebeia are to be recovered during any vegetation clearing
for relocation into adjacent retained vegetation. Damaged beehives are to be “boxed-up” for later
relocation into adjacent retained vegetation.
The physical removal of fauna may be required if fauna species do not voluntarily relocate out of
the clearing area. The fauna spotter/catcher is to determine the most sensitive and practical
method for fauna removal (refer to Section 4.3 below).
The fauna spotter/catcher is to maintain a record of all fauna species encountered (excluding birds that
are not nesting within the clearing area). Any fauna species observed during the pre-clearing survey are
to be monitored throughout the clearing activities to ensure they do not re-enter the clearing area.
4.3 RELEASE METHODS
The fauna spotter/catcher will be responsible for the relocation of any animals encountered within the
clearing area which do not voluntarily vacate during clearing operations. It is the responsibility of the
fauna spotter/catcher to identify a suitable release location for any fauna species to be removed. In this
instance, it is recommended that fauna species are relocated to within the vegetation to be retained
within a conservation covenant in the west of the site.
