                                     Budget Actuals

As reported in April 2015, the 2014/15 animal management budget, overestimated the dog
registration revenue by approximately $180,000. This was mainly due to the fact that the
majority of dogs were de-sexed and a large number owned by pensioners, thus paying lesser or
no fee. This was further complicated by estimates for the house to house dog audit, where an
estimated 1500 dogs (based on national statistics) were expected to be added to Council’s
system with the vast majority of those dogs being entire. Although 1780 new dogs were located
the majority again were de-sexed and micro chipped. This meant that revenues from the house
to house dog audit were well below the projected income. These issues were amended in BR4.
On the positive side, the results of the 2015 dog audit have revealed that Noosa Shire has one of
the highest percentages of de-sexed dogs in the state with almost 90% of dogs in the community
being de-sexed. This reflects the success of the “responsible pet ownership” media campaign
that has been promoted in Noosa shire over the past 20 months. This campaign is now being
used to target a spike in dog attacks during the last days of August, with 11 attacks being
reported over a 9 day period in late August.

At year end Animal Control revenue was slightly higher with revised conservative projections
factoring in the reclassification of animals. Expenditure was also higher due to relocation of
employees to this cost centre and the movement of leave provision for these employees.
