transects across the site, while walking or driving. When conducting nocturnal surveys with the
use of a spotlight please follow the below procedure:
• Avoid prolonged exposure to the light (i.e. longer than 2 minutes)
• When practical, use a red filter or, preferably, a dimmer switch to reduce light intensity for
prolonged observations once the animal has been located.
Amphibian Survey
Systematically designed active searches should be conducted nocturnally for frogs and frog calls
within the site area, in addition suitable habitat such as streams, wetlands and other water
bodies should be targeted. This survey requires experienced observers and the following needs
to be recorded the length and type of area surveyed, time spent conducting the survey and the
weather conditions. Avoid disturbing breeding sites or having any chemicals on your hands when
handling amphibians. Follow all the recommendations in the Hygiene protocol for handling
amphibians and avoid handling animals where possible or minimise the time spent handling any
animal. All animals are to be returned to the exact location it was captured from, all animals are
to be released as soon as they have been identified.
Swamp Crayfish Survey
Swamp Crayfish Surveys need to be conducted where Swamp Crayfish Habitat is being disturbed.
Surveys are to be conducted prior to disturbance activities commencing. Surveys are to include
