undertaken to remove cyanobacteria. An extract is provided in Appendix A. The potential rectification methods are
summarised below:
If cyanobacterial blooms are a result of plant failure or lack of vegetation, replanting of the WQCP should be
immediately undertaken. The presence of dense vegetation will help remove algal growth due to shading and is less
likely to be smothered.
If cyanobacterial blooms are a result of high nutrient concentrations, immediate actions would involve removal of
sediments, using a 1 or 2 week “dry out period” for the WQCP to destroy existing algae. Another solution would be to
pump out the WQCP over the Bioretention Basin or embankment over a period to treat and remove algae. Long term
actions involve catchment management solutions (i.e. identifying the source of nutrients flowing in to the WQCP and
applying corrective measures).
Immediate management responses involve providing signage around the WQCP warning of the potential health risks,
restricting access, and use chemical actions to eliminate toxins (specialist advice should be sought prior to
undertaking chemical actions)
Refer to “Water by Design – Rectifying Stormwater Assets” for further details of appropriate corrective actions.
