4.4.2.1    Rate of Spread
Shrub and heath – R = 0.023 *V1.21*VH0.54 (Catchpole et al. 1998)

Where

          R = rate of spread (km/hr)

          V = Average wind speed at 10m above the ground (km/h)
             (Note: for heath vegetation, a nominal value of 45km/h shall be used)

          VH = average height of classified vegetation (m)

4.4.2.2    Fire Intensity

I = H*W*R/36 (Byram 1959)

Where

          I = fire intensity (kW/m)

          H = heat of combustion (kJ/kg) - approximated as 18,600 kJ/kg

          W = overall fuel loads (t/ha)

Potential bushfire intensity was then classified according to the categories outlines in Table
6 below.

                Table 6 – Potential Bushfire Intensity Classifications (Leonard et al. 2014)
                      Potential Bushfire Intensity Class Potential Fire-line Intensity

                      Very High (potential intensity) 40,000+ kW/m

                      High (potential intensity)                 20,000 – 40,000 kW/m

                      Medium (potential intensity)               4,000 – 20,000 kW/m

4.4.2.3    Flame Length

Shrub and heath – Lf = 0.0775I0.46

Where

          Lf = flame length (m)

          I = fire intensity (kW/m)

4.4.3 Results – Anticipated severity of bushfire attack
The calculated values for potential bushfire characteristics at the site are provided in Table
7 below.

The modelling predicts slow moving, but very high potential intensity fires from the west
with predicted maximum flame lengths of approx. 10.5m.
