INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 31 MARCH 2015
4. Greenwood Grove Estate
Street Names: The Greenwood Grove Estate is situated west of Cooroy off Garnet Street. It
consists of a main drive and seven courts. In 2007, the land developer PEET Limited in
conjunction with surveyors Max Watterson
& Associates submitted proposed names to
Noosa Council for the streets in the
subdivision. The names approved by
Council are listed below and shown in the
following plan:
Straker Drive
Pinbarren Court
Dunbar Court
Blanfords Court
Wilkinsons Court
Luttons Court
Arthur Court
Wheeldon Court
It has been suggested that these names were selected from a book on the history of Cooroy and
were intended to honour people associated with the Mill. To date, supporting documentation
regarding the background to the choice of these names has not been able to be obtained from
either Peet Limited or Max Watterson &
Associates. It should be noted that the
development has recently changed
hands and is now being managed by
WM Projects.
The Estate is being developed in stages
and a site visit indicates that three
stages have been developed and sold to
date. This encompasses the first section
of Straker Drive, Blanfords Court,
Pinbarren Court and Dunbar Court.
Research undertaken by the Heritage Librarian suggests that the street names approved for this
development do have links to milling families in the district, as follows:
NAME BACKGROUND
Straker Long-term mill owner, as outlined above
Pinbarren Mt Pinbarren, local geological feature
Dunbar Vere Dunbar had a mill on Mt. Tinbeerwah in partnership with Wally and
Stanley Sivyer. Vere’s sister Ruby was married to Wally Sivyer. The Sivyer
family are connected to the Fenwick family.
Blanfords Presumed to be intended to recognize the Blandford family, partners in the
mill, as outlined above.
Wilkinsons Peter Wilkinson and Frank Straker partnered to form Kiln Dried Timbers
Luttons Jack Lutton and his sons operated sawmills in Imbil in the 1920s and 1930s.
The lease was taken over by North Coast Sawmills and the mills closed.
Arthur Arthur as a surname of significance could not be identified. There was an
Arthur John Straker and Arthur Carter, partner in the mill with Blandford,
Llewellyn & Smith.
Wheeldons Donald Wheeldon was a Cooroy sawmiller in the 1920s. His brother Ernest
was a farmer in the district.
