PROPOSED NEW BUILDING INVESTIGATION
1. Introduction
CSI Soil Testing was commissioned by HR Design Group Consulting Engineers to conduct a
Geotechnical investigation to determine the indicative sub-surface foundation conditions of the
proposed building site. A site classification in accordance with AS 2870 has been conducted, although
it must noted that this standard may not apply to a non-residential building, in which case Design for a
Commercial (non-domestic) site should be carried out by Engineering Principles.
This report should be read in full and kept together at all times.
2. Site conditions:
The area is well grassed. The general area slopes at approximately 3% in an undulating area. The
design engineer should be aware of the presence of trees on or near the site and that they may have
an effect on the performance of the footings/slab, whilst in place and after removal. The design
engineer should take all considerations and satisfy themselves in this regard.
3. Field Work:
Boreholes with continuous flight augers (BH)
Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)
Pocket penetrometer (PP)
Sampling
Site observations
4. Soil Assessment and Groundwater:
The bore logs of the site indicate that the soil profile consists of a SILTY/SANDY CLAY FILL over CLAY
FILL over CLAY. No groundwater was found during the time of the investigation.
The design engineer should be aware of possible unusual moisture conditions caused by open
stormwater channel behind the rear boundary and that this may have an effect on the performance of
the footings/slab. The design engineer should take all considerations and satisfy themselves in this
regard.
5. Laboratory Testing:
Samples were taken on site at the time of drilling of the sub-surface clay strata. U50 tubes were used to
obtain an undisturbed sample. This is used to gain a pocket penetrometer reading estimating Allowable
Bearing Capacity (qa) and for Shrink/Swell testing to determine an estimated reactivity (Iss) of the clay
which in turn assists in determining the predicted surface movement of the soils due to seasonal
moisture changes. It must be noted that a sample is a very small snapshot of the whole site volume.
Soil conditions can change rapidly over a very short distance, both vertically and horizontally, and with
variations caused by time and developments. Results are therefore used a guide in determining the
whole foundation conditions of the site. Other factors used may be local knowledge, nearby
investigations, reports of other reputable geotech companies and the visual and tactile observations on
site at the time of investigation.

Section 3
6. Site Classification:
Based on the field investigation carried out on the above address, and in accordance with AS2870-
2011,
This site has been classified as Class “P”, due to
• Layers of uncontrolled clay fill > 400mm.
• Layers of soil with an indicative bearing capacity of 50 - 100 kpa.
Based on the information attained by the site investigation, the indicative potential surface movement of
the site would be that of an “H1” Classification 40mm < Ys <= 60mm, due to the presence of highly
reactive clays in the soil profile.
• The construction should be founded into a strata bearing capacity that is greater or equal to 100
kpa with no underlying soft layers, or to an allowable bearing capacity as specified by a qualified
structural engineer.
Although it must noted that this standard may not apply to a non-residential building, in which case
Design for a Commercial (non-domestic) site should be carried out by Engineering Principles.
7. Allowable Bearing Capacity (qa) :
Based on the results from the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) and the Pocket Penetrometer (PP)
an Allowable Bearing Capacity of (100 kpa) is achievable. The structural engineer should relate the
requirements of the structure to the borelog information provided.
(*The estimate of bearing capacity determined by DCP results can be based on a paper delivered by M.J Stockwell BE,
C.ENG, MICE, “Determination of allowable bearing pressure under small structures” Journal of New Zealand Institution of
Engineers (Vol32, No. 6: 15 June 1977)).

8. Limitations
Investigation of the site is limited due to economic and time constraints. A soil investigation should
always be used as a guide only, to give a general indication of sub surface strata, its approximate
surface movement and its capacity to bear the proposed construction for the site. The design engineer
should relate this report to the specific needs of the construction proposed for this site and if further
information is required, should treat this report as preliminary and request a more in depth investigation.
Classification is based on site information as at the time of investigation. If after excavation of the site
footings, the soil profile is significantly different to that indicated on the attached borelogs, or if the
building is situated in a different location as that marked on the site sketch or if any material change has
occurred to the site, this classification report will become void. This office is to be notified of such
occurrences, so as a new investigation can be carried out (further charges will apply).
This report is a site classification and does not constitute a Geotechnical Engineers assessment, if the
structural engineer deems it necessary for a full assessment to be done, a specialist Geo-technical
engineer will need to be consulted. This report does not constitute a slope stability assessment, if the
local authority deem it necessary for a slope stability assessment to be done, a specialist Geo-technical
engineer will need to be consulted.
During and after construction, site drainage must direct all surface, subsurface and roof water away
from any construction and toward stormwater run-off areas. It is the owners responsibility to ensure
stable moisture conditions around the structure at all times. Guidance can be found in the CSIRO
information sheet ‘Guide to Home Owners on Foundation Maintenance and Footing Performance’ or
the QBCC booklet ‘Guide to Preventing Structural Damage to your Home’.
It must be noted that a borehole and sample is a very small snapshot of the whole site volume. Soil
conditions can change rapidly over a very short distance, both vertically and horizontally, and with
variations caused by time and developments. Results are therefore used as a guide in determining the
whole foundation conditions of the site. Other factors used may be local knowledge, nearby
investigations, reports of other reputable geotech companies and the visual and tactile observations on
site at the time of investigation. Even so, actual conditions may vary considerably from those described
in this report.
This report does not constitute a mine shaft subsidence assessment. If the local authority deem it
necessary, application to the Department of Mines and Energy is necessary for a specific site report. A
specialist Geo-technical engineer will need to be consulted if there are any issues.
