SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 11 JULY 2017
However, it's real value is as a community-inspired program. Community leaders
from hospitality, retail, tourism, events, schools, environment and the not-for-
profit sectors will be active in promoting community waste reduction and
alternative practices. They will be establishing a new culture and behaviour
around plastic use and waste. Having an active community engaged and aligned
with Councils waste reduction ambitions, at a time of growing awareness and
concern about plastic pollution, is a perfect storm.
The results will directly assist Council in understanding community motives and
behaviour, providing services and meeting its future waste goals.
This opportunity will also exist during a time that a Container Deposit Scheme
and ban on single use plastic bags in Queensland will be introduced, a time that
will heighten community awareness about litter and alternative practices.
In addition, the proposal will provide valuable information and future strategic
advice to Council about the development of new and innovative solutions to
waste/resource management. An important goal is to reduce mixed waste to
landfill and improve the market for secondary resources. The challenge is always
to control the waste stream, provide effective collection and apply best practice
infrastructure, this proposal will be invaluable in this regard.
Involvement
As the key representative of the community, Council involvement is essential to
authenticate the project as a whole-of-community initiative. The participation of
Council represents the first step in the formal roll out of the plan. It signals, for
all stakeholders, the green light to participate.
With Council involvement, stakeholders can formally endorse a plan going
forward and confirm its activities. It is intended that this is an evolving plan
based upon specific goals, where the broad engagement of the Noosa
community will be built over the course of the plan. It will start with the early
adopters and through plan promotion and inspiring action will deliver outcomes
and maximise community involvement.
Council will play a vital role, with others, in promoting and coordinating and in
delivering specific tasks for the project success.
Decision We Seek from Council
1. Council support for this initiative and agreement to join the Coordination
