6. WASTE MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT
6.1 Potential Pollutants
The proposed chicken meat farm has the potential to generate pollutants from the following
sources:
ACTIVITY POTENTIAL PROPOSED COMMENTS
POLLUTANTS TREATMENT
Roads, carparking Sediments, nutrients, Bioretention basin, The MUSIC model assesses the
heavy metals, bioretention swale, proposed treatment train for the
grassed swale, increase in area of hardstand,
pollutant generating areas and
demonstrates that pollutant load
reductions are achievable with the
proposed treatment train.
Chicken Shed Sediments, nutrients Roofwater reuse tanks Stormwater infiltration into the shed
will not occur and therefore no
pollutants from the chickens will
result from this activity
Chicken Litter Nutrients, No treatment proposed The bunded compost storage area
Storage will be covered and designed to
ensure no stormwater infiltration,
therefore no stormwater runoff
should be contaminated by this
activity
Chicken Litter use on Nutrients No treatment proposed The proposal to use the chicken litter
Avocado trees as fertiliser for the existing avocado
trees, and replace the use of
commercial fertilisers on the trees
has been assessed. It is determined
that approximately 50kg of chicken
litter per tree per year will be
required to equate to current fertiliser
regime. This will be managed to
ensure excess nutrients are not
given to trees by undertaking leaf
and soil analysis. Excess chicken
litter will be sold as a fertiliser. This
is further discussed in the Sections
below.
Dead chickens Nutrients, bacteria, No treatment proposed Dead chickens will be taken off site
for appropriate disposal
