Driveway 2
5. Provide additional detail demonstrating that the proposed alignment of
‘garage driveway 2’ will not create potential traffic hazards for all road users.
The additional detail must be prepared by a suitably qualified person (RPEQ –
Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland) and include, but not be
limited to:
b. a turning path plan for vehicles reversing out of ‘garage driveway 2’ onto
Delorme Street; and
c. a traffic assessment demonstrating that vehicles (as described above) have
sufficient sight distance to avoid colliding with a vehicle reversing out of
‘garage driveway 2’ onto Delorme Street.
A review of the proposed Driveway 2 has been undertaken considering the existing
driveway, surrounding street network, existing patterns of on-street parking, and
constrained road geometry. It is noted that the existing driveway is in the same position as
the proposed Driveway 2 and is considered a non-worsening of the existing situation.
Vehicles reversing out of Driveway 2 are perpendicular to the crossover compared to the
existing skewed situation. This affords greater visibility to drivers reversing out of Driveway
2 compared to the existing skewed crossover.
As the Safari Street intersection is the only exit for Derlorme Street, the critical conflict
movements and adopted rationale are:
a. Turning left into Delorme Street from Safari Street
i. Road users have reduced speed to turn into Derlorme Street, after
navigating the previous intersection of Wyandra and Safari Streets.
These intersections have raised the awareness of drivers and reduced
reaction times.
ii. Combined with the ascending road grades of Safari and Delorme
Streets, contribute to reducing the stopping sight distances.
b. Approaching the Safari and Delorme Street intersection from Delorme Street
i. On-street parking is prevalent for Delorme Street with road users
requiring to reduce speed to navigate around parked vehicles as a
chicane.
ii. Road users are aware of the upcoming intersection with Safari Street
and combined with the descending road grade, have a heightened
awareness and subsequently, shorter reaction time.
The surroundings are a local residential area with local speed limits, numerous intersections
and conflict points, which generally raise the driver’s awareness and reduce reaction times.
Utilising a reaction time reflecting alert driving conditions and mean braking deceleration
for a hazard on wet, sealed road, the available sight distance is sufficient to avoid colliding
with a vehicle reversing out of Driveway 2.
