Introduction
This plan outlines our commitment to effective environmental stewardship in the operation
of our algae production facility at 14-16 Action St, Noosaville Australia. As a responsible
organisation, we recognise the importance of minimising potential environmental impacts
and promoting sustainable practices in our operations.
Once fully operational, this facility will be equipped with 45 separate bioreactors, capable of
containing 180 000 litres. These bioreactors will be housed in a securely enclosed building
with restricted entry. To minimise water consumption and waste water generation, a
recirculating system will be employed.
Importantly, photosynthetic algae utilise CO2, providing a powerful mechanism for adopting
more sustainable biomanufacturing processes and reducing carbon footprint.
Our algae production system represents an innovative approach to cultivating algae for
various applications while minimising the reliance on external resources. By implementing
this system, we aim to achieve efficient use of water, nutrients, and energy, as well as
mitigate the potential release of pollutants into the environment.

Water Management
Efficient Water Usage
The recirculating production system is designed to ensure the efficient utilisation of water
resources throughout the entire production process. Water is carefully managed, filtered and
recycled within the closed system, minimising the need for additional water inputs and
reducing overall water consumption. Furthermore, the design of cleaning and washdown
procedures takes into account the objective of minimising water consumption.
Seawater Collection
Certain species intended for production grow in saline environments. Salt water utilised in
production will exclusively originate from operators who possess a valid water collection
permit. External auditing and certification mitigates the risk of unacceptable ecological
impacts. Permit currency shall be audited in accordance with the Annual Audit Schedule.
Nutrient Management
Optimising Nutrient Utilisation
The media formulation utilised is a widely adopted recipe for algae cultivation, including
algae intended for human consumption. All nutritional components are agricultural-grade
fertilisers which are used extensively as fertilisers for food crops, including foliar
applications, with no withholding periods specified. The media formulation, including
contaminant levels, adheres to the standards outlined in the Code of Practice for the Naming
and Describing of Fertilisers and for the Levels of Contaminants in Fertilisers (Biosecurity
Regulation 2016).
Extensive species-specific research has been conducted to ascertain the optimal media
addition rate, ensuring the prevention of nutrient accumulation while avoiding any limitations
on algal growth. Cell analytics are employed to accurately calculate the appropriate dosage
of media, effectively mitigating the risk of nutrient buildup.
In addition, the water nitrate level will be continuously monitored with an ideal range of 1-5
ppm and an upper limit of 10 ppm.
Nutrient Disposal
Media concentrate shall be used solely for its intended purpose. If, for any reason, it cannot
be used as intended, the services of a professional waste disposal provider shall be
engaged.

Wastewater Management
The recirculated algae system minimises the generation of wastewater. The operation at full
capacity is anticipated to generate approximately 7 000 L per day of wastewater from
operation of the bioreactors, processing of algal cell mass and cleaning activities. All water
used in the production system will undergo ultrafiltration and ultraviolet treatment;
wastewater will be transferred into a holding tank and undergo dose chlorination prior to
discharge to the sewer to ensure that no viable organisms are discharged to waste.
Media addition is based on algal cell analytics to reduce nutrient accumulation in the
system. Water levels shall typically range from 1-5 ppm nitrate and not exceed 10 ppm. No
environmental impacts have been identified in association with the planned method of
processing and wastewater discharge.
Waste Water Composition was calculated considering water filtration, volumes per day,
water type and composition. The Risk Assessment has been completed and approved by
Unity Water and the Trade Waste Discharge Permit was approved and issued under the
number #19318 and as per below images:

Controlled Administration of Chemicals
Chemical Inventory
An up-to-date inventory of all chemicals used in the biocycle algae production is maintained.
This inventory includes chemical names, quantities, hazard classifications, safety data
sheets (SDS), and storage locations. This inventory is periodically reviewed and updated.
Chemical Handling and Storage
All personnel involved in the handling and application of chemicals shall be trained on the
proper procedures, including safety precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE)
requirements, and emergency response protocols.
Chemicals are stored in designated areas that are secure, well-ventilated, and appropriately
labelled. Spill containment systems are used for hazardous materials to prevent leaks or
spills from reaching the environment. Incompatible chemicals are segregated. Chemical
storage is audited in accordance with the Annual Audit Schedule.
Chemical Use
Only designated, trained staff are authorised to use chemicals. Relevant Standard Operating
Procedures cover the use of all chemicals utilised during production. Scientific grade
measuring cylinders and calibrated scales shall be used for ensuring accurate chemical
measurement and application. Detailed records of chemical applications, including dates,
quantities used, and bioreactors treated shall be kept.
Chemical Drift
Due to the closed nature of the bioreactors and the facility, there will be no occurrence of
chemical drift.
Airborne Emissions
The cultivation of algae in closed system bioreactors will not generate emissions of dusts,
vapours, gases or other airborne contaminants. Any airborne emissions within the
production facility, generated independently of the closed bioreactors, will be filtered through
the HVAC system (hepa filtered) to remove microbial and particulate matter.

Waste Management
Minimal solid waste will be generated through the production process. Media packaging
materials will be appropriately recycled. In the event of unforeseen circumstances requiring
the disposal of algae, proper treatment will be conducted prior to discharge to ensure the
absence of viable cells.
Wastewater management is addressed separately.
Energy Efficiency
Energy-efficient LED lighting has been utilised for the lighting system for algae production.
Additional, LED lighting will be utilised throughout the entire facility, with all internal lighting
being switched off outside of operational hours.
A HVAC system shall be utilised to maintain the required process temperature range for
algae growth without excessive energy consumption. The production and lab areas utilise
cold room panelling to form an insulator. This assists with the reduction of energy
consumption required to maintain environmental conditions through the HVAC system.
Selection of an electricity plan utilising green renewable energy from wind presents various
advantages: reduced operating costs along with lowered carbon emissions; predictable and
cost-effective finances for electricity-generation; reduced costs of maintenance and fuel.
The energy efficiency performance of all equipment shall be assessed prior to selection with
preference given to items with low energy consumption. Equipment will be reviewed
periodically to assess potential technological advancements with improved energy
efficiency.
Where required, process piping is insulated and lagged to reduce energy losses.
PA actively supports the option of remote working, where practicable, to further minimise
environmental impacts.
Noise Assessment
The planned procedures will utilise closed system bioreactors that operate exclusively within
enclosed workrooms located in a fully sealed building. It is expected that the noise levels
originating from the building will not surpass background noise level, making a Noise
Management Plan unnecessary at this point. If any alterations are made to the operations,
noise levels will be monitored accordingly.

Traffic and Access Assessment
As required, PA will engage external contractors to manage traffic during non-standard
processes. There are no foreseen concerns regarding additional traffic or access issues to
the site during standard processes. The building site is located within an industrial zone.
Pest and Disease Management
Tanks are exclusively inoculated from cultures that have undergone rigorous identity and
purity speciation. Inoculation cultures are placed in quarantine until positive speciation
results are obtained in accordance with SOP-QUA-035 Incoming Materials Quarantine. This
robust testing includes morphological taxonomy and DNA barcoding. Any cultures showing
signs of impurity will be deemed unsuitable for production and will be disposed of following
approved decontamination and disposal protocols.
The closed system employed in the process significantly minimises the risk of pest and
disease contamination. Daily microscopic analysis is performed on the production culture to
ensure its integrity. The species used in production are not classified as pests or diseases,
nor are they known carriers of pests or disease-causing organisms. Consequently, there is
no anticipated unacceptable environmental or health risk associated with any potential
unintended release resulting from natural or man-made disasters.
The production area has a negative pressure differential of at least 5 pascals to restrict air
dispersion to the environment. In addition, a HVAC system shall be operational with hepa
filters to filter airborne microorganisms and particulate matter.
A tank cleaning procedure is established (SOP-PRO-010 Bioreactor Clean in Place
Procedure) to reduce the risk of tank bioburden.
An environmental monitoring procedure will be established within the production area to
allow for early detection of any microbial contamination issues and the implementation of
timely corrective actions.
Proceduralised entry requirements have been established to assist with mitigation of
pest/disease management. Furthermore, entry to the production area is regulated through a
controlled entry system and a dedicated airlock.
All wastewater will undergo dose chlorination prior to discharge to ensure that no viable
organisms are discharged to waste.

Biodiversity Conservation
The closed system production method, and disposal of non-viable organisms, ensures that
there are no concerns regarding the conservation of biodiversity.
External Environmental Monitoring
Taking into account the self-contained nature of our operation and the appropriate disposal
of non-viable organisms, our risk assessment has determined that the impact of our
processes on the surrounding environment is minimal. Consequently, we have reached the
conclusion that an external environmental monitoring program is currently unnecessary and
not applicable.
Emergency Preparedness
Control and Containment Systems to Manage Equipment Failure
A dedicated monitoring system shall be utilised for monitoring critical parameters and
process performance. Alerts are automated to notify relevant personnel immediately in the
event of critical process deviations (out of specifications).
Comprehensive documentation of emergency shutdown procedures is in place, and
personnel undergo thorough training and competency assessments to ensure their
proficiency in executing these procedures.
A preventative maintenance schedule will assist in addressing potential equipment issues
before they lead to failure. Scheduled maintenance activities help ensure equipment
reliability and reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures.
Each bioreactor is constructed as an individual, self-contained unit, completely separate
from the others. Consequently, in the event of a breach in the integrity of one bioreactor, the
remaining bioreactors will remain unaffected, ensuring their continued integrity.
In the event of a major breach to bioreactor integrity (e.g., major equipment failure, natural or
man-made disaster), the entire facility is bunded to hold 100% of the process facility
(approximately 200 000 L). The bunded liquid is processed through a submersible pump into
a water treatment/neutralisation system prior to any trade waste discharge.

Emergency Events due to Unauthorised Access
Access to the building is regulated through the use of restricted locks, and subsequent entry
to the production space is further controlled by an additional restricted lock system.
A monitored alarm system is installed to ensure prompt detection in the event of a breach to
site integrity.
Flood
The site is situated at an elevation that is not susceptible to Extreme Flood Events, as
indicated by the flood maps (Noosa Council Public Mapping System - Flood and Storm
Management; see Figure 1 & 2). The integrity of the site's containment will remain intact
even in the event of floods.
Major Flood Extent:
These maps show major flood inundation extents and represent a large and relatively
uncommon flood event which may occur (at least) once in an average life time. It is possible
although less likely for a flood event of this size to occur more than once in a single lifetime.

Extreme Flood Extent:
These maps show extreme inundation extents. These extents represent very large and very
unlikely (rare) flood events. These are exceptional events that relatively few people will ever
witness. Whilst very unlikely, it is possible for these events to occur. (Noosa Council, 2023)

Fire
This overlay shows bushfire prone areas, grass fire prone areas and low fuel load areas.
(Noosa Council, 2023).
The site is not located in a fire prone or potential impact buffer area (see Figure 3).
If a fire were to occur, it is not anticipated that any significant adverse environmental impacts
would result from a breach in site integrity. This low risk is due to the specific species being
produced (native and common) and the chemical composition (non-hazardous) of the
production water.
In addition, the facility is a standalone, independent, building with unrestricted access should
emergency services require it.
