Native Foresters In the absence of detailed, long term studies on Swamp Crayfish in the Noosa Region, the precautionary principle has been applied in determining the extent of potential habitat, resulting in what is likely to be an overestimation. The possibility exists that the species may not be able to reach the western side of the modelled potential habitat or may have been eliminated from the more developed, modified western areas as a result of previous drainage and vegetation clearing works. Whilst the majority of actual Swamp Crayfish habitat lies within the retained vegetation areas, clearing will come to within five metres of the actual or realised distribution. As such, it will be important to clearly demarcate the areas of occupied or actual habitat for the species on site and ensure minimal disturbance to vegetation adjacent to occupied habitat areas.
