SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 MAY 2020

Queensland Waste Levy
On 1 July 2019 the Queensland Government introduced a $75-per-tonne levy for waste disposed
to landfill. This generated some teething problems for Waste Management staff due to inaccurate
data input by weighbridge attendants and the interface of Newcastle Weighing’s software
programme Wasteman 2G to meet the legal requirements for reporting. Summary data returns for
all movements of waste internally and external to and from the site need to be uploaded each
month for calculation of waste levy fees payable by Council.
The introduction of the waste levy also has a requirement that vehicles disposing of waste with a
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 4.5tonnes be dual weighed (in and out after unloading), which
has produced traffic management issues on the site with incoming vehicles backed up, and at
times onto Eumundi-Noosa Road during peak periods.
The construction of a second outbound weighbridge is now considered essential for safety and
traffic managemnt on the site and is currently being designed for construction in 2020/21.
