Environmental
Landfill Gas Volumes (Cubic Metres) by Month 2019/20
The following graph shows a comparison of the cubic metres of landfill gas flared each month by
LMS. Under the Contract with LMS, staff are not permitted to publicly release the volume of gas
flared as this is “commercial in confidence”. (LMS generate revenue from auctioning carbon credits
associated with flaring and potential volumes for auction should not be available to LMS
commercial competitors). However, LMS accept that staff may report generally on monthly
variations in gas volumes captured without disclosing actual cubic metres of gas flared.

Landfill gas extraction and Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN) targets.
The Waste Section is working with the Ann Nolan, Council’s Carbon Reduction Project Officer for
Zero Emissions Noosa (ZEN) to reduce the carbon impact at the landfill.
 The landfill is the most significant contributor (66%) of the total carbon emissions for Council.
 The whole of Council is intended to be carbon neutral by 2026.
 Staff are working with LMS to install lateral gas extraction lines as each layer of the landfill is
completed to capture more gas. Additional vertical gas wells to improve methane capture for
flaring of methane are also planned.
