6 FACTORS AFFECTING DATA ACQUISITION
6.1 DATA ACQUISITION
The data acquired in this survey should be considered in light of the following factors.
          1. Weather conditions preceding and during the survey have been
extremely dry. Thus grass clippings are probably underestimated and
             leaves are likely overestimated
          2. Fruit and vegetable waste collected in the survey was both wrapped
             and unwrapped in newspaper.
Unwrapped fruit and vegetable weight data is likely to be more
accurate then that acquired in areas where this waste was wrapped in
             newspaper.
6.2 OTHER GENERAL ISSUES
Excessive odour was noted on a number of occasions. In most cases, the odour
arose from wet grass clippings although decaying vegetable matter also accounted
for some of the odour.
At times the survey team was approached by residents who offered the opinion that
the two week disposal cycle for fruit and vegetable waste too long, resulting in an
unacceptable odour and/or is also unhygienic. It was suggested by a resident that
these matters would be satisfactorily resolved if the collection service was weekly.
Another resident advised that virtually all of their food organics were used to feed
their worm farm and that they were therefore very unlikely to ever be disposing of this
material in their bin.
One particularly odorous bin was collected. While the quantity of fruit an vegetable
waste was small, the bin contained free liquid. Another bin contained fruit fly larvae
and animal bones.
AREA SPECIFIC: Disposal of palm fronds are clearly an issue in areas like Noosa
Waters, as evidenced by the number of householders that placed palm fronds in both
the general waste and greenwaste bins.
