GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 16 JULY 2018
Some of the more interesting applications considered by Council during 2017/18 included:
o Refusal of a request for an extension of time for an old approval on Hollett Road,
Noosaville;
o Approval of the redevelopment of the Noosa RSL building;
o Signage issues on storage businesses in the Noosaville industrial estate;
o Approval of the redevelopment of the commercial shops on Hilton Terrace, Noosaville;
o Approval of ‘Orange on Sunrise’ at Tinbeerwah; and
o Approval of a home based business at Cooroibah.
Council had success in the Planning and Environment Court. The appeal for the Retirement
Village at Eenie Creek Road was withdrawn, the appeal over the deck at Noosa Harbour was
settled, the home business swim school at Noosaville withdrew their appeal, we were
successful with the infrastructure charges appeal at Lake Macdonald and we are substantially
through the hearing of the Peregian Beach development proposed by Thomco.
Council commenced a study via CSIRO’s Data61 research unit to undertake research into
the concept of an Institute of Sustainability for Noosa. The report is expected to be finalised
soon.
Council adopted a policy to oppose any further applications for coal exploration, coal mining,
coal seam gas exploration or coal seam gas production within the Shire. This is in keeping
with Council’s environmental stance.
Corporate Plan Theme 2: The Noosa Community
“Our community is connected, safe and happy and able to meet their potential”
Key achievements as we work towards our long term goal include:
Council finalised the settlement of the purchase of Johns Landing at Cooroibah. This was
one of the most significant projects of 2017/18. More than 90 people were re-housed through
the work of the Noosa Community Roundtable. Rehabilitation of the land (partly purchased
with the Environment Levy) has commenced with the removal of a significant amount of
rubbish and contamination.
Council adopted a three-year implementation plan for the Noosa Social Strategy. This
includes an annual update to Council on progress for implementation of the Noosa Social
Strategy. Included within the Social Strategy is the establishment of the Noosa Community
Roundtable which successfully assisted with the transition process at Johns Landing and is
now focusing on affordable housing.
Council adopted a Sport and Active Recreation Plan following extensive community
engagement. That Plan will help guide Council in managing community facilities and
programs associated with both active and passive sports.
An implementation plan was adopted by Council in
February 2018.
Council has commenced the development of a Community
Health and Wellbeing Plan. This process commenced in
March 2018 with the establishment of a Reference Group
and will be completed during 2018/19.
Work is also progressing well on Noosa’s Cultural Plan.
The Consultative Committee has finalised a draft Plan
which is currently available for community consultation.
The Queen’s Baton Relay event was held in Noosa on 26
March 2018. With over 35 baton bearers and thousands of
residents lining the route, the Baton Relay was a
successful event with positive feedback from the
Commonwealth Games organisers.
