ACOUSTICS & AIR QUALITY
5 Acoustic Measurements
Acoustic measurements consisted of noise logging and a brief attended noise measurement.
5.1 Attended Noise Measurement
An attended noise measurement was undertaken at Location A as shown on Figure 2.1.
Location A was located on the fence line between the two southern-most at the designated site
on Trading Post Road, Cooroy.
The measurement was undertaken at 1pm on Wednesday 11th November, 2014, over a 15
minute period using a field and laboratory calibrated Norsonic NOR140 sound level meter. The
microphone height was approximately 1.3m above natural ground level and was located in the
free field. Weather during the time of monitoring was fine and warm, with no cloud cover.
The measured noise levels are summarised in Table 5.1. The parameters noted in Table 5.1 are
described in the glossary in Appendix A.
Table 5.1 Attended Noise Measurement Results
Location Date & Period Results* & Notes
Time (Minutes)
A 13:24pm 15 Statistical noise levels: L10 56 dBA, Leq 54 dBA, L90 43
11/12/14 dBA
Passing car 54 to 57 dBA
Passing heavy vehicle 61 to 67 dBA
Train passby (Tilt train) 63 dBA Lmax
Train passby (Tilt train) 67 dBA Lmax
Noise from insects audible around 4 to 8 kHz
Note: * The reported noise levels, excluding the statistical noise levels, are the instantaneous levels
read from the sound level meter, and generally represent the range in noise levels or maximum
noise levels for a particular noise source.
5.2 Noise Logging
Noise logging was undertaken at Location A as shown on Figure 2.1. Logging was undertaken
from the 11th of November 2014 to the 19th of November 2014 using a field and laboratory
calibrated Larson Davis LD831 environmental noise logger. Noise logging was undertaken in
the free field.
Data from the Bureau of Meteorology (Brisbane) indicates that weather during the monitoring
period was generally fine and warm, but with light rainfall on Tuesday 18th (2.8mm). Overall, the
noise monitoring data is considered acceptable for use in this report.
The measured noise levels are shown in Figure 5.1 and 5.2. The parameters graphed in Figure
5.1 and 5.2 are described in the glossary in Appendix A.
