tension and compression cycles) should also be undertaken prior to construction. Kentledge for static
testing, or simulated cyclic loads, should prove the piles to a minimum of two times the expected
working load within tolerable deflections.
The advice of a specialist piling contractor must be sought regarding an assessment of suitable pile
types, pile design, and associated constructability considerations. The most cost-effective piling solution
depends on a combination of pile type, diameter and length. Piling companies are best equipped to
make this assessment based on the costs of the various options. Piling companies should make their
own assessment of anticipated founding levels and required pile lengths. Footings for proposed
jetties/pontoons must be assessed by a specialist piling contractor. It is envisaged that a barge mounted
piling rig would be required for working within the canal beyond the revetment wall.
Settlements of piles founded as above under working or serviceability loadings would not be expected to
exceed 1% of pile diameter (e.g. less than 10 mm for pile diameters less than 1 m) provided any
CFA/bored pile bases and sockets are cleaned of disturbed material and cuttings.

6.4.5 General
All footings should found such that they are not adversely affected by (or affect) any adjacent
excavations, trenches, or retaining walls that are not designed to support building loads. Footings should
found at least below a plane extending 1 m horizontally from the base of trenches/excavations/retaining
walls, then rising up at 1V:1H, as illustrated in Text Figure 9.
Where footings are located within a horizontal distance of 1.5H (H being the batter height) of any cut or
fill batter crest, these footings must be founded at a depth level with the toe of the batter.

If any soil conditions encountered during construction are found to differ from those noted in the
geotechnical investigation, Tectonic should be notified immediately and an inspection carried out to
determine if changes to footing design are required.
Please note that steel/concrete structures would need to be designed for durability as outlined in
Australian Standard AS2159-2009 Piling – Design and Installation. Refer to the discussion on soil
aggressivity given in Section 5.4.

6.4.6 Site Classification
Site classification for footing design is determined in accordance with AS 2870-2011 Residential Slabs and
Footings and depends on the depth of cut / fill undertaken at a site, variations in the natural soil depths,
and the reactivity of the in situ materials and any imported fill materials.
Although the site classification would be strictly Class P as per AS2870 due to the presence of existing fill
and loose sands, the potential relative movements between the building and surrounding ground (i.e. at
