Noosa Spit SEMP Final Report 71
Shoreline Erosion Mitigation Options
4.2.1.1 Rapid Assessment Results
The following options considered likely to gain agency support with a positive score following the
rapid assessment include:
• No Regrets / Preliminary Actions:
○ Ongoing monitoring of shoreline position, scarp location and recession rates so that triggers
for escalating the management strategy can be identified
○ Review and update erosion hazard studies (such as this SEMP) and recommended strategies
every 5 to 10 years.
○ Investigate joint funding arrangements to implement the preferred strategy
○ Provide the community with information regarding coastal hazards, risks, monitoring and
strategy implementation
○ Support dune care/shoreline habitat management programs
○ Seek to avoid unnecessary or informal beach access that may cause damage to shoreline
habitat by maintaining public access points.
• Planned Retreat Options:
○ Allowing Dog Beach to recede without intervention, potentially leading to a breakthrough. It is
noted that the reputational, political and legal risks associated with this option may be
unacceptable.
• Protect – Local Management Options:
○ Seawall along the entire length of Dog Beach to protect land-based assets and avoid a
breakthrough
○ Construct a field of short groynes to deflect currents and stabilise the shoreline
○ Extend the existing training wall at the western end of Dog Beach to provide benefit to a longer
section of the updrift shoreline
○ Nourish the shoreline and/or infill the Dog Beach channel to offset erosion and improve beach
amenity.
The following sections describe the detailed analysis of the shortlisted options. As noted above, the
outcomes of the SEMP and rapid assessment of options should be reviewed and updated every 5 to
10 years in response to changes to physical environment, new information gained through monitoring
and/or community expectations.
