5.4 Footing Design
There are several structures proposed , with differing founding specifications recommended for each. These
are given below in Table 5.
Table 5: Footing Design Details
Suitable Foundation Type Target Foundation Allowable Bearing
Renovation element Material Capacity
Proposed Carport High Level – Strip/pad/post Into very stiff clay 150 kPa
footing approximately 0.5 m BGL
Into medium dense silty
Proposed Porte Cochere High Levelfooting
- Strip/pad/post sand / very stiff clay 150 kPa
approximately 0.5 m BGL
High Level - Strip/pad Into medium dense silty
Proposed Garage footing sand 150 kPa
approximately 0.5 m BGL
Proposed retaining walls Reinforced concrete bored Socket minimum 1.0 m into
natural very stiff or hard End bearing: 400 kPa
north of house piles silty clay below fill
supporting fill platform Shaft friction: 30kPa
approximately 3 m BGL
Socket minimum 1.0 m into
Possible Future Two moderately weathered,
Storey Extension, Pool, Reinforced concrete bored very low strength rock End bearing: 1 MPa
and associated retaining piles, or mass excavated Approximately 1.5 m below
pad footings existing ground level Shaft friction: 90kPa
walls (depths may vary following
earthworks)
Foundation excavations must be inspected by a suitably qualified geotechnical engineer prior to placing steel
and pouring concrete.
Footing design must also account for potential soil reactivity, which was previously assessed as Class M by
Bowler.
