INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 22 JULY 2014
Other non-metallic bulky waste, including furniture and E-waste was compacted within the
compactor trucks and taken to landfill.
The contractor undertook sorting of the compacted material taken to the landfill, mainly to
segregate and collect any remaining metallic materials.
The Bulk Waste Collection Service was conducted over a period of 7 weeks. On several
weekends the Contractor was unable to complete the collection service on the specified weekend
due to the large increase in waste material presented; subsequently the waste collection
continued throughout the week until completed.
A small number of rural residents could not be provided with a Kerbside Bulk Waste Collection
Service due to difficulties related to the large front lift truck not being able to gain access to their
properties due to inadequate road access.
To overcome this issue Council provided a 15 cubic metre bin on the Kin Kin sports ground for
these residents. The bin was well utilised.
Staff are also arranging for 2 x 15 cubic metre bins at the North Shore Waste Transfer Station in
order to minimise any disadvantage to the North Shore residents.
Data Bulk Waste Collected
The service has not been undertaken since 2009 which resulted in a major increase in the
volume of waste collected.
Total waste collected 2014 1,501 tonnes
Metal segregated and recycled 315 tonnes
Waste sent to landfill 1,186 tonnes
Waste collected 2009 612 tonnes
2. Positive Outcomes
1. The Bulk Waste Collection Service was very popular with the community.
2. A quantity of useful material left at the kerbside was collected by individuals within the
community for the purpose of reuse.
3. A separate collection truck used for recovery of metal resulted in a good recovery of metallic
items.
4. A total of 315 tonnes of metal was collected, valued at an estimated $58,905 when sold to
recyclers. Cleanaway will share in some of the profits from the sale of the steel under the
resource recovery contract.
3. Areas for Improvement
1. Many members of the community ignored the information on the brochure and media in
regard to prohibited material. Asbestos, batteries, mattresses and tyres in particular were
commonly placed out for collection and placed at locations other than the location from which
the items came from, in order to disguise responsibility.
