In case of dispute, the infrared spectroscopy method is the reference method. A.2 Infrared spectroscopy method A.2.1 Extraction and preparation of the extract An effluent sample of approximately 500 ml is weighed into a separating funnel with a rated volume of 1000 mi, directly from the sampling device (see Figure A.1). Within 15 min of sampling the pH shall be set to between 1 and 2 using sulphuric acid (H2SO,) and 50 ml of 1.1.2-trichloro-1.2.2-trifluroethane (C2CI3F3) shall be added. It is then immediately shaken, with a frequency of 3 Hz to 4 Hz for 10 min and the phases allowed to settle for 30 min. Alternatively, tetrachloroethylene (C2Cl,) (IR grade) may be used as the extraction solvent.
