Hi Bob
It has been an action-packed month at the Hub full of inspiring talks, impressive
talent and exciting collaborations taking shape.
We were thrilled to welcome the mudputty.com team as new members of the
Hub. Founded by Peregian Beach local and repeat entrepreneur, Raeleen
Kaesehagen, mudputty.com is an online community of classes, workshops and
activities for women, men and children of all ages and interests. Learn more
about Raeleen and mudputty below in our new segment Lightbulb Moments.
Starting in July, we're launching a series of exciting talent development
programs aimed at enabling girls to pursue their interests in STEM
fields (science, technology, engineering, maths). These programs will draw
on our growing network of world class female mentors like Raeleen who
inspire and support these young talents. More below.
The Hub has invested in a cutting edge live-streaming system that allows us to
capture and share the amazing content coming out of the meetups and events
happening in the Co-Lab. In the last month alone we've learnt from an
Astrophysicist, the founder of Australia's leading rocket company, a global
expert in computer vision for robotics and the founder of Queensland's most
renowned digital agency, just to mention a few.

There is more to come in July - the Screen meetup features Ken Crouch of Screenworks, the organisation that has helped the Northern Rivers area of NSW become a film powerhouse. More below. I'm particularly looking forward to hosting a HubLunch with another world- renowned figure - the man who predicted Trump, Brexit and ScoMo, the big data expert, Professor Bela Stantic. More on this below. My favourite moment this month was seeing the full Atmail team of 30plus employees come together from various corners of the earth to little Peregian Beach for their annual sales conference this week. Atmail remains the shining example of creating high-value employment opportunities in Noosa through digital innovation. What Founder Ben Duncan and more recently Dave Richards, Glen Lynden and the team at Atmail have achieved, is simply phenomenal and we're proud to have them at the Hub. I hope those of you taking time off during the July holidays have a restful break. Kind Regards, Chris Boden Digital Hub Director Lightbulb Moments with Raeleen Kaesehagen, Founder of mudputty.com Raeleen is a local mum, serial entrepreneur and CEO. She founded her first company, a retail management SaaS startup called Octahedron Software, at 22 years old, grew it to clients in 27 countries and exited in 2017. She now somehow balances being a full-time mum and being CEO and founder of

exciting new startup mudputty.com which enables people to find and book classes or activities in their local area. Visit mudputty.com As we move into term 3 and 4, we have an action-packed calendar with exciting programs designed specifically for girls. Project Athena The Hub has partnered with 3 of our local state high schools, Sunshine Beach, Noosa District and Coolum to create a unique program that helps grow the number of girls participating in STEM fields. Through terms 3 and 4, Project Athena will see 10 girls from each of these schools in grades 8-10 come to the Hub for 3 days of inspiring workshops and mentoring led by world class female STEM practitioners. Workshops will cover advanced topics like DNA extraction, machine learning, wearable technology and software development. These STEM students will also go on excursions with high tech companies like Boeing and collaborate on entrepreneurial STEM projects of their own with ongoing support from mentors. Flying Inventor Program for Girls Drones are powerful flying robots. Learning how they work and how to fly them, we believe, is a great way to give students exposure to important engineering and computer science concepts and encourage them to pursue these pathways. For term 3, the Hub has partnered with the Noosa Library service to offer a Flying Inventor program program exclusively for 20 girls from of our local schools in grades 9 or 10. The 6 day program will see ten teams of two girls learning to build, fly and race FPV (first person view) drones for prizes. After-school Robotics & Engineering Club for Girls Starting in term 3 we're introducing an after-school club for girls on Mondays from 4-6pm. Taught by Australia's champion senior girls robotics team, this fun

engineering and robotics workshop will teach the essentials of building, programming and competing with the Mindstorms robotics platform with a wide array of projects. The Hub is excited to be hosting Professor Bela Stantic for a HubLunch on the 22nd of July. Bela is the acclaimed big data scientist who humbled the professional pollsters by correctly predicting the Trump election, the Brexit referendum result, the recent Coalition win and other high profile decisions. Bela is Professor of Computer Science and Head of School of ICT at Griffith University as well as founder and Director of their “Big Data and Smart Analytics” Lab. He is internationally recognised in the field of data analytics and applying Big Data analytics in the tourism, environment and health domains, having published over 130 peer reviewed journal publications. This HubLunch event will feature a fireside chat with Prof Stantic, hosted by locally-based technology executive Kirsty Telburn, Head of Deep Learning & Personalisation at Telstra Digital. The HubLunch series of events invites world class technologists, authors, thinkers and researchers to come to Noosa and share their insights about the future with the key leaders and influencers in our community. Burning Platform
Each Hub newsletter will use this slot to remind
ourselves that CO2 levels in the atmosphere is the
burning platform. The latest reading (June 20) is 414.06
ppm. According to the science, 450 ppm is a point of no
return when we lock in warming of more than 2`C and
the planet becomes uninhabitable. At the current rate,
that happens in the late 2030's.

In 1965 technologist Gordon Moore predicted that computer chips would double
in price/performance every two years. Unlike, say, a pollster predicting the result
of an Australian federal election, Moore was spot on with his prediction and that
exponential improvement in computing power has provided the engine for
innovation in the 54 years since.
Moore’s law was the only curve in town. The belief that transistor counts on a
chip would double every 2 years became the predominant hypothesis for
investment in technology and the current masters of the universe surfed its
wave to fame and fortune displacing oil barons and industrialists in the Forbes
list. But there’s a new curve in town: the Keeling curve.
The Keeling Curve graphs the accumulation of carbon dioxide in Earth's
atmosphere using continuous measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory in
Hawaii from 1958 to the present day. The curve is named after scientist Charles
David Keeling, who started the monitoring program and supervised it until his
death in 2005.
Section 13
In 1971 Moore and his colleagues at Intel released the first commercially available microprocessor, the Intel 4004. It contained an incredible 2,300 transistors. That same year, Keeling measured atmospheric CO2 at Manu Loa at 325.46. This week’s measurement is 415.22 ppm. Our iPhones now have microprocessors with 10 billion transistors. Let’s put that into context, 12 months ago: 409ppm; 50 years ago: 326.66ppm; 250 years ago, est: 250ppm. According to the science, 450 ppm is a point of no return when we lock in warming of more than 2`C and the planet becomes uninhabitable. At the current rate, that happens in the late 2030's - yes, Keith Richards will only be 95y/o and I guess the Stones will be on their Uninhabitable Planet tour. What does this all mean for the Hub? In much the same way as Moore’s law has done for the last 5 decades, it’s my belief that the Keeling curve will define the core hypothesis for technology innovation and investment in the decades ahead because of the existential threat that it charts. Local tech entrepreneurs, Ant Moorhouse and Brian Keayes, call this movement #earthtech and this month launched an ambitious new venture from the Hub that aims to identify and accelerate startups that are working on technologies that could exponentially reduce the use of finite and fragile resources. Ant and Brian believe that Noosa is well-positioned to be a global epicentre for #earthtech offering a living laboratory for innovators who are working on promising technologies and an attractive environment for technologists and scientists who want to play by the ocean and raise a family.
Section 14
Noosa of course has major skin in the game: a fragile coastal environment at particular risk of extreme weather or sea level rises and a local economy reliant on visitors who come to enjoy its natural splendours. This fits well with the Digital Hub’s mission to help build a world class digital ecosystem in Noosa by attracting, developing and supporting talent. If you know of someone working on #earthtech, please tell them Noosa is open for business and to get in touch with me. In the rest of this email, I’ll share some of the exciting upcoming activities at the Hub, including our monthly meetup program, creative residencies, after-school program, holiday program, AI education series with the Noosa Chamber and machine learning workshops. Regards, Chris Boden Digital Hub Director PS: You can share this newsletter with a friend by clicking here. Artificial Intelligence is the technology topic on everyone's lips. It's a subject that everyone seems to have an opinion on but no-one knows much about. We've partnered with the Noosa Chamber of Commerce to deliver a series of AI events through this year that we hope will help our business learn more about what AI really means, how it’s created and how it may affect their businesses and lives in the coming years. Our next event on the 20th of June will zero in on computer vision.
Section 15
Our presenter is one of the world's leading experts on the topic, Peter Corke,
QUT's Distinguished Professor of Robotic Vision and director of the Australian
Centre for Robotic Vision. Peter literally wrote the book on computer vision and
his online Robot Academy has delivered over 750,000 lessons to 120,000
learners from all over the world.
Prior to QUT, Peter was a senior principal research scientist at CSIRO where he
founded the Autonomous Systems laboratory, a 50-person team undertaking
research in mining, ground, aerial and underwater robotics, as well as sensor
networks. Peter has a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering
Science degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical and
Manufacturing Engineering, all from the University of Melbourne.

View this email in your browser? Dear <<First Name>> The theme for the last month at the Hub has undoubtedly been "learning". If you'd hidden out in the Co-Lab over the last 4 weeks you may have learned an advanced visual effects technique from a Hollywood editor; or how to use the Fusion 360 design tool to create your next invention, from a world class engineer; or how to optimise your online marketing funnel, from the guy who does that for Ford. You may also have learned how to make house music with Ableton Live, from a top-charting Producer; or how a data scientist does their job from a real-life practitioner; or how to use the Holochain distributed ledger to change the world, from the creators of that project. Over the Easter school holidays, curious young technologists have been learning how a computer is constructed and how to program the Arduino micro-controllers, from a young engineering prodigy & his team. This weekend, 50 young students learned how to create a LEGO robot, from the country's leading school robotics team. To round things off, I was invited to give the graduation speech to the CQ University class of 2018 this week and the theme was "learning" - more specifically, why you need to become a learning machine in the age of

An interactive game, an app for reporting blue bottle sightings and a dancing bear were among the many young inventors’ creations on show at the young Inventor Awards Expo held at the Hub on the 4th of April to celebrate young talent. Inventors between the ages of 8 and 20 were invited to submit their projects for the awards program, plus attend the Expo night to demonstrate how they work. 18-year-old Malo Wellbrock took out first prize in the 18-20 age group category with Smartpark, a system for monitoring parking availability. “It is great to be recognised with this award – my passion is inventing hardware and software solutions for real-world problems and my aim is to do that as a career,” said Wellbrock. 15-year-old Brendan Lewis earned first prize in the 13-17 age group with his reusable bottle rocket, while 8-year-old Blake Telburn scooped top gong in the 8-12 age category with Beachspotter, a site for monitoring bluebottles and stingers. The judging panel – which included tech inventor and marketer Michael Carter and GravityFit General Manager, Kirsty Richardson – was impressed with the students’ skills. “We were impressed with both the ideas and the level of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) skills used in these projects. It is very encouraging to see these young inventors bringing their own ideas to life and pursuing their passion,” Mrs Richardson said.

Fundraising is often the most difficult and stressful part of a startup founder's
journey: having to constantly pitch potential investors, negotiate deal terms,
endure due diligence processes and keep momentum going in the business is
not for the faint-hearted.
Having access to active angel investors is therefore of vital important to the
tech ecosystem because entrepreneurs with great ideas need financial backing
at an early-stage to turn them into scalable businesses.
Angel networks like SunCoast Angels fulfil an important market-making role:
they aggregate on the (funding) supply side by building a network of high net
worth individuals who want to invest in technology companies and they
aggregate on the (funding) demand side by offering promising entrepreneurs
the chance to present to those investors at pitch events.
The SunCoast Angels investment group will be gathering at the Hub on the
19th of March at 5pm for a pitch night.
If you are a prospective angel investor wanting access to startup dealflow on
the Sunshine Coast and beyond, please come along and meet the team.

Dear <<First Name>> Did you hear about the Noosa twins earning a handsome living as one of the world's top Fortnite eSports teams? Or the local company who helped NASA solve the problem of astronauts forgetting how to walk? Or the Instagram Coach? Or the Kids teaching other kids to code? Or the upcoming AI conference? Or the weekend hackathon that made your life better over the holidays? Well, it's been a busy summer at the Hub and there are lots of exciting digital things brewing for Noosa in the new year so I thought I'd put it all in a newsletter and share it with our friends and colleagues. Read on to find out more... Regards, Chris Boden Digital Hub Director Local Gamer Wins Australia's Biggest eSports Prize
Section 39
Noosa's own eSports superstars, Jesse and Jordan Eckley - aka the X2Twins - dominated the Fortnite Summer Smash which took place at Melbourne Park alongside the Australian Open Tennis. The competition, described by organisers as “the largest competitive gaming event in Australian history”, had a prize pool of $500,000. The event kicked off on Saturday where 500 players went to battle to make it to the top 100 finals. There was no shortage of international talent, with the X2Twins stealing the limelight. Jesse Eckley, one-half of the X2Twins, walked away with the $100,000 AUD and was crowned the King of Australian Fortnite. Jesse and Jordan ran a Fortnite clinic for young gamers at the Hub in the September school holidays last year and the pressure is on to do that again in April ;-). Upcoming Events There is an exciting schedule of monthly events happening at the Hub this year which will bring together members of various digital industry groups to network, share ideas, and hear inspirational talks from top notch presenters. REBOOT REBOOT is a new industry group for digital creatives and professionals based in the Noosa area who provide online marketing, web/app development, content creation or related services. The purpose of the meetup is to organise, inspire and upskill the digital creative community in Noosa to grow the profile of the sector and attract opportunities for local service providers. These meetups take place on the second Wednesday of every month, starting 13 Feb 2019 from 6-8pm. The inaugural REBOOT meetup will feature Peter Bone, a locally-based "Instagram Coach" who has figured out how to build a large following on the social network. His account, @achievetheimpossible was set up after his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, helping him find inspiration through motivational quotes which he then shared with others. The account now has over a million followers. NoosaCrypto NoosaCrypto is an industry group for blockchain and cryptocurrency professionals and technologists in the Noosa area. The group which has around 160 members, meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the hub with the next meeting on Weds 6th Feb 2019 from 6-8pm.
Section 40
Coding From Beach Coding from Beach is the leading industry group for technologists on the Sunshine Coast. The group has around 430 members and meets at the Hub on the first Thursday of every month. The next meetup takes place on Thursday 7th Feb 2019 from 6-8pm. Sunshine Coast Producers Group The Sunshine Coast Producer Group is a new monthly meet-up designed for local electronic music producers and DJs based on the Sunshine Coast. The group aims to build a community of people who are interested in developing their skills as either DJs or producers, put local talent on the map, foster collaborations and develop young talent. Meetups take place on the second Thursday of every month with the exception of the inaugural meetup which is being held on Saturday 23rd Feb due to touring special guest availability. Barception: A New On-site Barista & Reception Service Give The Hub A Unique Flavour They say technologists are machines that convert coffee into code so we've launched "barception" - an on-site barista and reception service at the Hub. Hub members can now start their day with coffee and a conversation in the Hub's cool outdoor Co-Op canteen before heading inside to build their digital businesses. Council has partnered with SevGen Indigenous Corporation who will operate the barception service as part of their social enterprise activities to provide opportunities for young talent. SevGen currently operate other Deadly Espresso sites on the Sunshine Coast, including a cafe at Eumundi and a coffee kiosk at Noosa Reviva. SevGen Director, Terri Waller said "We're very pleased to be at the Digital Hub and have had received many messages of support from the Peregian Beach community who are excited to have us here. This will be a great environment for our Deadly mob to grow and develop their skills."
Section 41
The Hub's coffee kiosk is also open to the public. Users of the Peregian Beach Community House and visitors to the nearby medical facilities can now drop by the Co-Op and get the brew of their choice whilst checking their email on the Hub's gigabit wifi connection. Noosa Today Article GravityFit Lifts Off With Commercialisation Grant And New Home At The Hub It’s not commonly known that going into space is actually terrible for your spine and joint health. After spending a concentrated amount of time in space, astronauts are actually unable to walk off the shuttle when they land. They have to literally be carried off to undergo extensive rehabilitation and often sustain long-term damage to their bodies. Dr. Carolyn Richardson has spent her working life investigating how gravity affects our health and why this phenomenon occurs in space. Her research with the University of Queensland, European Space Agency and NASA regarding the effect of gravity on our muscles and bones has laid the foundation for finding out why this happens and how to fix it. It is this research that underpins GravityFit, the Noosa-based company run by Dr Richardson's son, David and his wife, Kirsty. The company has become famous amongst elite athletes, especially golfers, for its range of exercise tools. Last Friday, Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien presented $478,950 to GravityFit as part of the Accelerating Commercialisation grant. The money will allow the local company to commercialise production of its G-Suit an intelligent training garment for athletes and astronauts. The G-Suite is being tested by elite athletes from various codes as part of their training regime. Its compression function puts more gravity sensory information into the body and stimulate those deep muscles and stabilises spines and limbs during training and stimulates muscle memory to aid performance and reduce injury. GovHack Prototype Turns Into Commercial Trial To Ease Holiday Parking Congestion Following the inaugural GovHack weekend hackathon held at the Hub in September, Noosa Council contracted members of the winning team to take the traffic monitoring prototype they had built to a commercial trial during the Christmas holiday period as part of the Go Noosa Transport initiative. Local technologists Gary Swanepoel and Mic Black developed a solution which counted traffic flows into and out of key parking zones to calculate parking availability and traffic congestion. Information was relayed to mobile VMS (Variable Message Sign) Boards placed strategically around the Noosa Shire, to display realtime parking availability and suggest alternative transport strategies during peak times. The information was also made available via the Go Noosa website and mobile app. Since going live in mid-December, the website has been utilised by more than 1000 people to view parking capacity and road congestion in Noosa Heads. Website developer Gary Swanepoel said more than half of all users had logged on to help them decide whether to drive or catch a bus. "Feedback has been really good,” Mr Swanepoel said "We've had a lot of locals say they've been using the free buses a lot more over the holidays and hardly using their car and that the live information has really helped them 'break their routine'.” Travellers can save the app to their phone via the website

Summer Drone Camp
The Hub was a hive of educational activity in January at the
conclusion of our holiday program for young inventors.
The four day Flying Inventor course taught teenage techies
how to build and race drones while the two day Micro-
machines workshop taught 9-13 year olds how to invent with
micro-controllers. The holiday courses were taught by four of
the Shire's most promising technology prodigies with minimal
involvement from adults.
Year 12 students Eamon Kriz (St John's College) and Connor
Middleton (Sunshine Beach State High), created an intensive
4 day program in which 10 students learned the engineering
principles of FPV (first person view) drones before racing for
prizes at the Noosa Leisure Centre. The duo were also able
to secure a special visit from the Australian Army drone
division and sponsorship support from CQUniversity.
Section 44
Kids teaching kids The Hub aims to help make Noosa a hotbed of home-grown technology and engineering talent in the years ahead through its skills development and mentoring programs. Having a vibrant holiday program is a key part of that plan. George Gleeson and Bryn Mailer, both 15 year old students at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, used the knowledge gained through their school robotics club to design holiday workshops which had their class of 17 focused youngsters inventing their own devices. The course earned rave reviews with a female participant commenting "I learned more in the workshop than I learned over the last year at school". These young instructors are being mentored under the Digital Hub's talent development program. "I was blown away by the level of engagement I observed between the students and instructors" said Roman Olivera, a parent. We've been incredibly impressed by the drive and professionalism of Eamon, Connor, George and Bryn. They've put in many hours of preparation during their school holidays and are fantastic role models for both the younger kids and their peers. Noosa Today Article Event: Surviving The AI Apocalypse The Noosa Chamber of Commerce is continuing its FUTURE series, examining the future of work and how technology is changing business.
Section 45
A key theme for this year is the impact of AI and Machine Learning. I believe we are on the cusp of another technological revolution, as we were in 2007 when Steve Jobs launched the iPhone that will change our lives even more that pocket supercomputers have. We've partnered with the Chamber to deliver a series of educational events that will help Noosa's businesses develop an understanding of this mega-trend and move beyond the headlines and cliches to become conversant in the technology concepts and be empowered to consider the opportunities and challenges for their businesses. We'll have a guest panel of presenters for an interactive Q & A session. Rohan Toll of the AI Academy, as our guest presenter, will demystify our understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics and Machine Learning. He will explain, what it is, isn't and why this will be the biggest disrupter of business norms for the next decade.
