           POLICY PURPOSE

The purpose of this Statement of Management Intent (SoMI) is to articulate Noosa Shire Council's
approach to flying-fox management within the Noosa Shire Local Government Area, and provide
guidance to staff, contractors, and private landholders on the management of flying-foxes.
           POLICY SCOPE

This is a Shire-wide policy and applies to public and private land.
           POLICY BACKGROUND

           FLYING-FOXES IN NOOSA SHIRE COUNCIL

Flying-foxes play a key ecological role in long-distance pollination and seed dispersal, and are critical
for the long-term persistence of plant communities (including eucalypt and sclerophyll forests). Their
ability to distribute seed and cross-pollinate over significant distances during single foraging trips is
particularly important in the context of contemporary fragmented landscapes.
Three species of flying-foxes occur within the Noosa Shire: the grey-headed, black, and little red
           flying-fox.
