Broadly, The J undertakes six types of activities to generate revenue.
Leasing: permanent letting of spaces to the University of the Sunshine Coast and to
Sunshine Coast Radio
Ticketing: selling tickets to events at The J and events in other venues e.g. Food
and Wine Festival, Noosa Long Weekend
Venue hire: renting part or all of The J to a hirer, e.g. Hillsong church or Sunshine
Coast Youth Theatre or Richard Clapton’s promoter
“Entrepreneured” events: initiating activities and running them at The J’s risk
rather than a hirer’s risk
Event support and equipment: providing support for events in The J, such as
technical support, marketing, set-up and front-of-house on a cost recovery basis
(associated with venue high activities)
Bar and kiosk sales (associated with venue hire or entrepreneured events).
As shown in the chart below, more than 50% of revenue comes from venue hire and
associated recoupments – equipment, staff, printing, marketing etc, with a further 15%
from bar and kiosk sales associated with venue hire and entrepreneured events. 10% of
revenue is from commission from ticket sales for venue hire events as well as events held
in other venues e.g. Noosa Long Weekend.
Self-generated revenue - ticket sales from events and activities initiated by The J only
represents 3% of revenue currently.
