Re: Development application for chicken farm, Lot 21 on SP226606 -
136 Top Forestry
Road, Ridgewood
Dear Mr Knaggs
I write in support of the proposal before council for a chicken farm enterprise to be developed
at 136 Top Forestry Road, Ridgewood, on Lot 21, SP 226606. I urge council to approve the
relevant development application, subject to three issues being addressed:
1. Monetary compensation to the council by the applicant/developer to maintain Top
Forestry Road, due to the extra traffic that will be generated by this enterprise;
2. The visual impact ofthe proposed sheds on a prominent ridgeline, which can be
ameliorated by conditions surrounding their shape, placement and colour; and
3. The council being satisfied that smells and noise emanating from the proposed facility
will not impact adversely on the nearest neighbour, 850m away, and on other nearby
residences.
These matters should not represent obstacles that would cause the development application
to be rejected.
I am obliged to inform you, at the outset, of a new organising in the Noosa Hinterland formed
to support and encourage economic development across our region. The Hinterland Noosa
Alliance, which is supported by all major community groups in the hinterland, has produced a
strategic document -
Towards a Green and Prosperous Future: A Vision for the Noosa
Hinterland in 2031. A copy has been lodged with council and its library service. That
document envisages that there will be two large-scale poultry enterprises established in the
hinterland in keeping with the agri-business development aspects ofthe strategic document.
I submit also that, while its operation in the Noosa Hinterland has been suspended, this
poultry farm is consistent with the council’s own draft Rural Futures Strategy. This would
seem to be an ideal site for such a venture, on an existing rural property, relatively secluded
and with no close neighbours whose lifestyle and enjoyment oflifestyle would be affected
adversely.
Referring to the three dotpoints above the documentation supporting the application refers to
a five per cent increase in traffic volumes on the Cooroy-Belli Creek Road as a consequence of
the chicken-raising facility being built. However, the application is deficient, indeed silent,
concerning traffic volumes on Top Forestry Road, which is a gravel road. The vehicle
numbers using Top Forestry Road will be considerable, and much more than just five per
cent. Given the high rainfall in this area and the size and wheel configuration of the truck
