Dear Mr Drydale
Thank you for your letter of 30 July 2015 about proposed free bus services in the Noosa
Council region during Christmas 2015/2016 (from 25 December 2015 to 3 January 2016)
and Easter 2016 holiday periods (from 25 March to 3 April 2016).
| am pleased to advise that the Department of Transport and Main Roads, TransLink
Division, supports in principle the free holiday bus initiative during the period between
25 December 2015 and 3 January 2016.
However, the free travel for the Easter 2016 period will need to be considered in early 2016
to allow for potential changes to policies and fares, prior to this date, impacting on the
accuracy of the calculation for the expected revenue loss.
Should Noosa Council proceed with the free holiday bus service during the Christmas
2015/2016 holiday period, the expected loss of revenue for services on routes 626, 627,
628, 629 and 632 is $44,675 (GST inclusive).
With regards to bus routes 620 and 631, these routes travel outside the Noosa Council
boundary and TransLink’s ticketing system technology is unable to be programed to only
charge a fare for a portion of a journey.
Should Noosa Council decide to offer the free holiday bus promotion on routes 620 and 631
during the Christmas period, the expected loss of revenue for these services will need to
include the entire journey and it is estimated to be $70,279 (GST inclusive).
As such, the expected total loss of revenue to provide free travel on all Noosa bus services
during the 2015/2016 Christmas period on routes 626, 627, 628, 629, 632, 620 and 631,
would be $114,953 (GST inclusive).
