Fauna Management Plan - 30 Pottery St, Pomona (2)
3.0 FAUNA MANAGEMENT - GENERAL RESPONSIBILITY
A suitably qualified and appropriately experienced fauna spotter/catcher holding a valid Rehabilitation
Permit from the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is to be employed to
undertake the fauna management measures outlined in this Plan. Approved vegetation clearing must only
be undertaken under the supervision of the fauna spotter/catcher. Fauna management is to be conducted
in accordance with all applicable local, State and Commonwealth government guidelines and legislation.
As per the requirements outlined in the Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020, where active
breeding habitat for least concern native fauna is to be cleared, the vegetation clearing must comply with
the existing Species Management Program (SMP) – low risk of impacts (available online). A species specific
SMP is required to be prepared and approved for activities that will impact on breeding places of
protected animals that are classified as extinct in the wild, critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable,
near threatened, special least concern, or colonial breeding species. Colonial breeding species include
microbats, squirrel/sugar gliders and birds such as fairy martins. An SMP is only required where an animal
breeding place has been identified and activities are required to tamper with the breeding place in order
to complete the scope of works. Animal breeding places include obvious structures such as bird nests and
tree hollows, as well as more cryptic places such as amphibian or reptile habitat where breeding takes
place.
Where active breeding habitat for a conservation significant fauna species or colonial breeding species is
to be impacted, vegetation clearing must immediately cease and a Species Management Program – High
risk of impacts must be prepared and submitted for approval prior to clearing recommencing.
The site is within Koala District A and therefore clearing must be carried out as per the sequential clearing
conditions as detailed in the Nature Conservation (Koala) Conservation Plan 2017 (the Plan). As the site is
less than 3ha, clearing of the koala habitat trees must be carried out:
(a) in a way that ensures, while the clearing is carried out, appropriate habitat links are
maintained within the clearing site and between the site and its adjacent area, to allow
koalas living on the site to move out of the site; and
(b) no koala habitat tree in which a koala is present is to be cleared, and no koala habitat tree
with a crown overlapping a tree in which a koala is present, is cleared.
Ultimate responsibility lies with the Project Manager/applicant to ensure that any individual associated
with vegetation clearing is made aware of the fauna management measures prescribed within this Fauna
Management Plan. Failure to comply with the prescribed management measures may result in the
contravention of legislative responsibilities and conditions of the development approval.
