PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 6 AUGUST 2019
About Ecotourism Trails
Welcome
QUEENSLAND’S ECOTOURISM WONDERS. PRESERVED. EXPLORED. TREASURED.
The Queensland Ecotourism Trails program aims to collaborate with Traditional Owners and
regional communities to deliver a new tourism opportunity for Queensland, founded on social,
environmental and economic outcomes.
The Cooloola Great Walk in the Great Sandy National Park on the Sunshine Coast is home to
some of the region’s most stunning natural environment, unique wildlife and fascinating ancient
cultural heritage.
Share your ideas and knowledge about the Cooloola Great Walk to assist with new
ecotourism offerings.
The Queensland Government has announced three shortlisted businesses for the Cooloola
Great Walk opportunity that are progressing into the Request for Detailed Proposal stage. The
shortlisted businesses have been invited to further develop their concepts and proposals which
could include low-impact eco-accommodation (in addition to existing walkers' camps along the
trail), guided tours and additional bushwalking experiences.
Any facilities along the trail must be delivered in accordance with the Department of
Environment and Science’s Implementation Framework: Ecotourism Facilities on National Parks.
Responses can be submitted using this site between 31 May 2019 and 22 August 2019.
Your feedback will help to inform future planning and the Queensland
Ecotourism Trail program outcomes.
Protecting culture
The Queensland Ecotourism Trails program brings together private Tourism Operators and
Traditional Owners through the delivery of low-impact ecotourism experiences that compete on
the world stage. Each trail is designed to offer an immersive cultural experience with Traditional
Owners playing an active role in the project's development, maintenance and operation whilst
enhancing connection to country.
Preserving and presenting natural assets
Each trail is carefully planned and designed within robust State, National and World Heritage
environmental management frameworks. The end outcome aims to deliver enhanced national
parks with enhanced monitoring activity of key areas such as species, pests and weeds, for all to
experience, enjoy and appreciate.
Future-proofing regional communities
The Queensland Ecotourism Trails program builds community resilience with an aim to create
long-term employment and business opportunities for Traditional Owners and regional
communities.
