PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 11 FEBRUARY 2020
We will also utilise local Noosa based Emmy award winning videographer, Clint Hempsall, to capture the
beauty of these largely unknown reef resources to create a selection of short videos to be shown through
social media and during community outreach activities such as our Reef 101 presentations. These short
videos will be used to highlight the significance of our marine assets within the Noosa region, as well as the
methodology behind Reef Checks programs. These videos have the potential to viewed by over 7000
followers through RCA's social media platforms, and will also be shared with the Noosa Regional Council,
to be used within their own social media outreach.
Through this strategic, science-based and collaborative outreach network, RCA will continue to increase
ocean literacy, support grassroots reef education, continue to build a network of passionate and informed
community members, boost partnership for conservation and translate citizen science findings into
meaningful action.
Our 2019 RCA-Noosa Council project was extremely successful and we believe it would be strategic to utilise
the momentum created to continue to build a solid Noosa region group of reef champions.

Project title - Keeping It In Kin Kin Project (KIIKK)
Brief project overview
On ground implementation of the Keeping It In Kin Kin project aims to reduce erosion hot-spots, remediate
riparian areas and improve soil health.
Full project description
Previous studies highlighted the increase of sediment build on the benthic floor of Lake Cootharaba, the
source of which predominantly originated from the Kin Kin Creek catchment area. LiDaR analysis from
images of the Kin Kin catchment between 2008 and 2015 highlighted major erosion points, the source of
Lake Cootharaba sediment, and became the basis for the KIIKK project.
The desired outcome for the KIIKK project is to reduce the nutrient laden sediment entering Lake
Cootharaba. NDLG aim to achieve this through the remediation of active and high risk erosion sites and
reduce the number of potential sediment erosion areas.
KIIKK objectives are to:
Restore and increase riparian buffer zones with tube stock plantings.
Rehabilitate active erosion sites – targeting soil stabilisation through coir logs, jute matting , high
density plantings and low impact construction of leaky weirs.
Improve soil health and increase quality and quantity of productive top soil on farming land – via an
increase in both diversity and density of soil microbial activity, improved pasture diversity and best
practice land management principles.
Improve water quality of the local Kin Kin Creek and its tributaries ensuring access to clean water for
agricultural and livestock use with off point water sources, thus limiting direct contact of livestock with
waterways.
Management of environmental weeds such as Cats Claw Creeper and Madeira vine, and other
invasive species.
Actively engage landholders both one on one and as a collective to enhance sustainable production
and management of the agricultural landscape.
This project sits as one of three discrete applications within the wider 'Noosa Hinterland Rural Extension
Program'. Educational and awareness activities across all three projects will be shared so be to most efficient
and effective. An overarching steering group comprising MRCCC, Noosa Council, Noosa Landcare and
Country Noosa will form to oversee extension and awareness raising activities. This already occurs in a
casual format with existing programs.
