Attention: Jack Lewis, Planning Officer
Dear Mr Lewis,
We are landowners that have lived for 25 years on our 37-acre farm along Top Forestry Road,
about a kilometre from David Milligan’s property, when~ we run a few cattle. We are
very
concerned that our beautiful area and lifestyle will be badly’ affected if his intensive chicken
farm proposal at 136 Top Forestry Road goes ahead.
Since our home is less than a kilometre from the Milligan property, the smell of the chicken
manure will veryunpleasant, especially during the wet season. Ifthe litter is spread under the
avocados more than once a year, the trees will die, and the worry is that there will not be
room to spread the amount that will come from the sheds every six weeks or so. During the
summer months, storms drop many millimetres of rain at a time, and that sawdust and manure
will make its way down the ridge and into Blackfellow Creek at the foot of the
steep slopes.
Platypuses have been sighted in the creek below Milligan’s property, in the West Cooroy
Forest Reserve, and surely this toxic waste will not be good for them.
There is also a big Koala colony in the West Cooroy State Forest Reserve that will suffer
when more wild dogs move into the area, attracted by the smell of the chicken farm.
Top Forestry Road was constructed along a narrow ridge and the houses were built very close
to the road, so there is no way to widen the road enough to make it safe for big trucks and
other vehicles to pass. The road is unsafe to drive on atthe best oftime, and accidents happen
regularly. Our driveway is steep, so we have to park in the road to open the gate, which will
be even more dangerous with the increased use of the roads by huge trucks. Even now we
hear the noise of garbage trucks and other big vehicles, changing
gears and braking the noise -
will be unbearable at night, when the chickens are being collected.
Finally, we would like to point out that the land that the chicken farm would be built on is just
not suitable for such a development, since those ridges are
very steep and consist of clay and
shale, with hardly any topsoil left to take up the composted litter. The farm will be seen,
smelled and heard by us all!
We request that you do not
approve this Development Application.
Yours sincerely,
/. tfJ., f’- fJ~
