Whist I agree that we want to stimulate business investment, primary production  and employment in the Noosa Biosphere, as a Noosa Hinterland resident, I must express my objection to the chicken farm proposal on Top Forestry Road, West Cooroy for the following reasons:




1.        We should be trying to attract clean, green, sustainable rural industries to the region and local food production enterprises that respect animal welfare. 

2. Intensive agriculture of the kind proposed will be supplemented by non-local imports of nutrients / antibiotics and will mass produce products that are not as desirable for our health or as sought after by our community as free range poultry alternatives.

3. The location proposed is in the upper Mary River catchment, and the potential for nutrient or chemical contamination of water quality is high given the steep topography and high rainfall. No sediment trap to date has ever been designed to effectively filter our silts and adsorbed nutrients. 

4.This will have downstream effects on aquatic ecosystem health and may cause stress to threatened species such as the Mary River Turtle, Cod and Lungfish. It will also limit the capacity of other sustainable productive enterprises to use the water for more desirable uses.

Most of us actively avoid buying and eating cage eggs and we do not feed battery hens to our children. We always look for organic, free range, good quality chooks from local butchers. We are a highly health conscious community, who look towards the future environmental sustainability of our region. This planning application will result in insalubrious conditions and conflicts with the fundamental values and the image of the Noosa Biosphere that we are trying to promote nationally and internationally.
