Appendix 3: Methods Used to Determine Impact of Tourism
As noted at the outset, this report was commissioned to determine the Value and Impact of
tourism on the Noosa Community. In order to do so various research techniques were
employed. These are described below.
Determining Economic Impact and Value of Tourism
Prior to the commissioning of this report, Noosa Shire Council had various reports outlining
the economic impact and value of tourism in Noosa. A key component of this commission
was to review and consolidate this information and determine the current likely value of
Tourism for Noosa’s economy.
SGS Economics and Planning reviewed all available data and provided a clear description of
the value of tourism in Noosa. This included turnover, contribution to Gross Regional
Product, value added and employment. Data that was utilised included LUCID economics
reports (Noosa Economic Profile 2018 and Noosa Priority Industries); ID profile of Tourism
and Hospitality Value; and Tourism Research Australia (TRA) Local Government Profiles.
In addition to the value of tourism, this component of the commission considered the
impact of tourism on the local economy in comparison to other industries as well as to
Queensland. This included analysis of employment and value added for industries in Noosa
such that high-value industries could be identified.
Community Benefits and Impacts associated with Tourism
As noted in Section 2, there can be various types of community impacts associated with
Tourism. In order to test what benefits and issues tourism brings to Noosa a number of
surveys were conducted: Resident; Business and Visitor surveys.
All survey forms were drafted by C Change in conjunction with the Tourism Noosa Board,
and the Business and Visitor surveys were conducted utilising the Survey Monkey platform.
The resident survey utilised industry Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing software
(CATI) and was conducted by Q&A Marketing Pty Ltd. All information was analysed using
SPSS. Survey forms are provided in Appendix 4 and further information on each of the
surveys is discussed below.
