Dear Mayor Jamieson

Although we are not located close to the site of the proposed broiler 
farm/factory at Ridgewood we have experienced a similar situation of a 
large chicken facility located beside our farm in another shire (that farm 
has been in the family for approximately 100 years).   These facilities are 
viable only because they impose huge costs on the immediate neighbours and 
the general community.  Instead of the facilities filtering all dust 
arising from the operations, purifying all water outflows, filtering out 
all odours, insulating to stop noise emissions, containing all light 
emissions and vegetating to obscure all sheds they let the community bear 
these costs.  In this case one of the biggest costs imposed on the 
community will be the cost to upgrade the roads to safely allow large 
trucks to access the facility.  If you are not able to fully require the 
developer to cover all costs then we believe you should reject the 
proposal.  In this case there are almost no benefits to the community from 
the proposal to offset the massive costs to the community.

Given that the SCRC staff recommendation was for rejecting the proposal we 
believe that any councillor supporting the proposal should be accountable 
to the community by providing reasons at the meeting for rejecting the 
staff recommendation.

We hope that our arguments will help persuade you to reject the proposal.
