APPROVED PLANS
132003.221152.6
NOOSA COUNCIL
19 JULY 2018
are to be removed and the roots covered with river sand or other coarse granular fill
before replacing the soil. Builder’s sand is not to be used, as its high salt content can be
toxic to roots.
• The advice of an Arboriculturist should be sought where underground structures present
within the TPZ are/will become redundant. In general it is preferable to leave such
structures in situ and seal them off as this avoids the need for significant excavation.
• All works within a TPZ must be supervised by the project Arborist and are to be carried
out according to the Australian Standard 4970-2009 and as permitted in accordance
with the prior approval of the Council.
Construction Work Within A TPZ
• Prior to installation of a new ground surface, existing ground cover vegetation should be
killed using an appropriate herbicide e.g. Glyphosate based products. Herbicides that
can leach through the soil e.g. products containing Sodium Chlorate should not be
used. Once dead, the vegetation and loose organic matter should be removed from
the soil surface using hand tools.
• If ground levels are to be raised with a TPZ this should be achieved by use of a granular
material that does not inhibit vertical gaseous diffusion e.g. gap graded fill. Depending
upon the load bearing capacity of the soil it may be necessary to install a load
suspension layer such as a cellular confinement system.
• Works within the TPZ may be permitted for the construction of approved works such as
modified footings (e.g. pier and beam, cantilevered slab etc.), designed to minimise
the impact upon the root system of the tree. Any excavation must be carried out by
hand and is to avoid damaging the protective bark of any tree roots encountered.
Should any roots over 25mm diameter be encountered, then the location of the
modified footing must be adjusted as required to prevent damage to these roots. Roots
smaller than 25mm diameter may be pruned back using a sharp saw or secateurs.
Where appropriate the project Arborist may be required to supervise excavations and
consult with the project Engineer as to the relocation of modified footings etc.
• Works within the TPZ may be permitted for the construction of above grade slabs and
pavements, designed to minimise the impact upon the root system of the tree. In
concentration carbon dioxide is detrimental to tree root function. Because this gas
principally diffuses vertically through the soil, new impermeable surfacing within a TPZ
should where possible be restricted to a maximum width of 3m and situated tangentially
to one side of a tree only, or confined to an area no greater that 10% of the TPZ.
• All works within a TPZ must be supervised by the project Arborist and are to be carried
out according to the Australian Standard 4970-2009 and as permitted in accordance
with the prior approval of the Council.
