EMP – CONSTRUCTION PHASE 4-10
4.3 Element C.3: Fauna and Fauna Habitat and
Aquatic Ecosystem Protection
Policy: To minimise the impacts of fauna during clearing operations and ensure protection of
adjacent habitat. (refer Conditions 19, 33-39, 50-55; Nature Conservation Act1992).
Strategy: Minimise potential adverse impacts on fauna.
Responsibility: Principal Contractor/SEO/Wildlife Ecologist.
Management Actions:
1. The Fauna Management Plan outlines management strategies to be implemented during the
Construction program.
2. The Nature Conservation Act 1992 and the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulation 1994
requires that protected animals whose habitat has been destroyed by human activities or natural
disasters are cared for and rehabilitated.
3. Site personnel are to be advised during training that all native fauna is protected. The specific
presence of koalas and other threatened species and their management are to be described.
4. The SEO will ensure that all construction and associated personnel are familiar with management
conditions relating to the protection of native fauna within the proposed development area. This is
to be facilitated through the Induction/Environmental Awareness training. Regular
monitoring/inspections would be undertaken to ensure all appropriate measures are complied with
to minimise potential negative impacts on native fauna within the development area.
5. During site clearing, the Wildlife Ecologist will ensure that a qualified personnel (as per Appendix
A) will be present with a minimum of EPA licence and Fauna Ethics number.
The Vegetation Retention and Clearing Strategy (Element C.2 and Appendix C) provides the direction
in regard to fauna protection during the site clearing activities to be undertaken in both the RHD and
RSL areas. Compliance with this strategy is a critical component of the environmental management at
the Settlers Cove site. The Fauna Management Plan provides further detail in regard to fauna
protection strategies during the site clearing program.
Performance Requirement:
• Ensure that best practice is used to minimise potential adverse impacts on fauna and that habit
values of the wider site are protected
• No death to native fauna with injuries minimised.
Monitoring: All staff and contractors to report any occurrences of injured fauna to SEO. Any fauna
