RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Director Community Services and Disaster Management &
Special Projects Officer to the Services & Organisation Committee Meeting dated 7 November
2017 and thank the members of and advisors to the Noosa Local Disaster Management Group
for their participation.
REPORT
This report provides an update on disaster management in the Noosa Shire since the Annual
Disaster Management Report 2016 was considered by the Services & Organisation Committee
on 11 October 2016.
1. Changes to the Noosa Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG)
Cr Tony Wellington remains the Chair of the LDMG and Cr Joe Jurisevic remains Deputy Chair of
the LDMG and Chair of the Local Recovery Group.
Following the resignation of Martin Drydale in January 2017, Alan (Fox) Rogers resumed the role
of Local Disaster Coordinator (LDC) and Ian Florence was appointed to the role of Deputy LDC.
Alison Hamblin is Acting Local Recovery Coordinator.
Council adopted the revised list of LDMG members and advisors at its Ordinary Meeting of 19
October 2017. Tourism Noosa is now an advisor to the Group.
2. LDMG Meetings
The LDMG met for ordinary meetings on 24 November 2016, 15 February, 22 June, and 21
September 2017 and will have its final meeting for this year on 16 November 2017.
3. LDMG Activations
The LDMG was activated twice in the period October 2016 to September 2017:
i. 1 December 2016. Severe thunderstorms were forecast to affect the Noosa hinterland.
The LDMG was activated but stood down within 45 minutes as the storms bypassed the
Noosa region. Severe hail was experienced in both Sunshine Coast and Gympie Council
areas.
ii. 30-31 March 2017. The LDMG was ‘stood up’ as Ex TC Debbie crossed the coast of
Queensland. Noosa experienced some minor flooding of roads and wind gusts reached a
peak of 124km/hr at Double Island Point late in the afternoon of 30 March. Multiple road
closures due to fallen vegetation and power outages were experienced. A number of
gravel roads required re-sheeting.
