Information capture, detection & reporting
Camera and AI technology

Council makes use of cameras, thermal scopes and artificial intelligence to review images
captured in ‘hot spot’ areas to identify pest species and their distribution across the Noosa
Shire. This allows for more targeted control and baiting programs to occur.

Fox detection: High-definition camera imagery in combination with lure-based monitoring is effective
for studying and controlling fox populations.

Conservation detection dogs

Conservation detection dogs are also a very useful tool for managing European red foxes across
the broader Sunshine Coast region. The trained dogs are deployed during fox breading season
when control efforts are most effective. This helps to record and map the distribution and
breading activity and target control. This is especially important in coastal dune systems, where
fox dens can be deep, complex and well-concealed. The fox control program is helping to
protect native species like marine turtle, eastern ground parrot, spotted-tailed quoll and water
mouse, which are vulnerable to fox predation. Detection dogs are also used to help locate and
conserve koala populations in Noosa through koala scat (poo) detection.
