2.2 Trade area population

Table 2.1 details the existing and projected population levels within the identified
trade area. Population forecasts are based on a number of sources, including the
following:

• Population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), including the
recently released results from the 2011 Census of Population & Housing; and

• Population Projections prepared by the Queensland Office of Economic and
Statistical Research, released in May 2012.

As shown, the recent and projected population levels within the Noosa Bowls Club
trade area is currently estimated at 34,540 people, including approximately
12,650 people within the primary sector.

Recent population growth throughout the Noosa Bowls Club trade area has been
moderate, with annual growth for the MTA averaging 102 residents between 2006
and 2011.

This growth trend is set to continue over the forecast period, with the trade area
population estimated to reach 35,630 people by 2026, reflecting average annual
growth of 0.1% for the MTA.

Noosa also attracts a significant tourist population as highlighted in Table 2.2.
When comparing the current estimated resident population of 34,540 residents
with the average number of visitors per day at 10,733 it is understood that
tourists add up to an additional 30% on average to the base population.

Given a large proportion of tourists and visitors to Noosa stay in self catering
accommodation, there is likely to be significant add on trade to the proposed
retail facilities estimated in the order of 20% - 30%.
