PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 DECEMBER 2021
REPORT
1. PROPOSAL
The application is seeking retrospective approval for a Home-based Business. The application
encompasses a small-scale meat processing facility located in an existing 51.7m2 shed located in
the north-western corner of the subject site.
The applicant has converted the shed into a small-scale meat processing facility. The shed has
been retrofitted to be utilised by the applicant exclusively to process wild game meat (Australian
Wild Game Harvesters) and is solely operated by the landowner who resides on the property.
There are no employees.
The landowner procures, prepares and distributes wild deer meat exclusively. The animal and its
by-products are harvested and prepared wholly within the purpose-built facility. The meat and
products are sold by the operator at local markets and directly to restaurants.
The operation of Australian Wild Game Harvesters consists of the following:
Once a week the operator leaves the shire and harvests up to five (5) wild deer. The wild
game is harvested and eviscerated in the field. Any waste not fit for use is left in the field.
The carcasses are transported in the operator’s, fully accredited harvesting vehicle and
brought to the subject site.
The carcass is unloaded and moved into the purpose-built processing shed where it is
prepared for sale. Approximately 98% of the animal is utilised and waste is kept to a
minimum.
A refrigerated trailer is packed for delivery on the Saturday and Sunday and the meat sold
at local markets or directly to restaurants. No onsite sales are proposed.
Australian Wild Game Harvesters is operated solely by the landowners and no deliveries to
the site are associated with the Home-based Business
The applicant has advised that “…no odour is produced, and the minimal noise generated from the
processing (cutting) of the carcass is contained inside the meat facility (existing shed). Minimal
waste is derived from the use (98% of the animal is harvested), and the waste is taken by vehicle
to Council’s Waste Recovery Centre..”. The applicant has also advised that the facility is not
expected to expand and that a maximum of five (5) animals are harvested due to the limited cooling
capacity of the facility.
