               2.2. Survey Methodology

                         Animal Signs
Native wildlife leaves scats, tracks and scratches that can be identified and are described by
Barbara Triggs (2004). These indicators should be used to provide positive identification of
species to be found within the area marked for disturbance. This data should be recorded in the
                         survey report.

                         Playback Calls
Playback calls can be used in an area to identify active species via acoustic monitoring these
methods can be used to identify the presence of inconspicuous species. When conducting
playback surveys use a megaphone (Figure 4- play the call of the target species for two minutes.
Allow a five-minute listening period between each playback using an Acoustic recorder (Figure

session per day to limit the disturbance it causes to targeted species.

                         Diurnal Bird Survey
This non-intrusive active area search provides a census of the avian biodiversity and abundance
within the survey site. This survey technique requires a highly skilled observe with substantial
experience in local bird species and bird calls. Transect are slowly walked through the site just
after dawn when birds are the most active. Avoid disturbing nesting birds during the survey.

                         Spotlight Counts
Native wildlife may be detected using a method of spotlighting during nocturnal surveys.
Spotlighting surveys are most effective way to determine arboreal mammal abundance and
density (Braithwaite et al. 1988). Can also be used to spot large terrestrial nocturnal mammals,
