Subject: 1192 dw Fyi Mayor RE: Cooroy Broiler Farm Proposal ~ Reference No: MCU12/0184 From: Karen McElroy Date: 2013-12-04T11:37:20+00:00 To: Internet Mailbox Sunshine Coast Regional Council Dear Mayor Jamieson RE: Cooroy Broiler Farm Proposal ~ Reference No: MCU12/0184 I write with concern about the Cooroy Broiler Farm and urge you to reject this proposal at the next council meeting and follow the Council's planning staff's advice. As a local resident and a health practitioner I am very concerned about this proposal on a number of grounds: * Health Impacts * Clearly there is considerable adverse effects on air pollution and water pollution that will effect resident's health. * Particular concern is drinking water, antibiotic resistance and respiratory disease. * There are many families with children living in the area, who have increased susceptibility and sensitivity to airborne pollutants. * Residents have a right to live with access to clean water and air and have their health maintained. * Environmental issues * Air and water pollution are to be expected and have the potential to seriously impact on * High rainfall in the area is a major concern for runoff and algal blooms and persistent bacterial residues that can affect livestock and local fauna. * This all conflicts with Noosa's Biosphere status and well known eco-tourism popularity * Traffic Concerns * The roads, location and infrastructure are clearly not suitable for large trucks and there will be considerable ongoing costs in maintaining roads. High accident risk in local area and wider Cooroy precinct * Tourism Impacts * This beautiful hinterland area is not suited to heavy industrial farming. * Birdwatching, bike riding, horse riding and scenic drives will all be devastated by the smell, noise and general pollution. Lastly, there are no economic benefits to the local community with the Ingham group now being owned by a multinational consortium. There will be virtually no jobs created locally as all the jobs are outsourced by the company in Brisbane. There is also potential for loss of income in the town due to the negative impacts on tourism and landowners properties will also be devalued. There is clearly no positive benefit for this Broiler Factory Farm to go ahead and I urge you to consider these points and make the right decision. Please do not let the profit motive of one individual and one big company destroy the lives of the many local residents effected by this. Yours sincerely Karen McElroy 255 Cooroy Mountain Rd, Cooroy Mountain QLD 4563
