Site Characteristics
It is key to understand how a bushfire may affect a site and the consequences on staff and
occupants. The locational context of the facility, relative to adjoining bushfire hazard is set out at
the figure below.

Both shrub and scrubland are subject to potential bushfire. This vegetation forms part of the
adjoining Noosa National Park and is subject to ongoing bushfire risk reduction practices such as
vegetation management and prescribed burning (on occasion), to help reduce fuel loads over
time. However, these activities do not remove the potential for bushfire, which could be ignited via
lightning strike, accidental or deliberate ignition.

To this end, it is important to understand bushfire hazard and behaviour. On overview is provided
below.

Understanding Bushfire Hazard
Bushfires have long remained a fundamental characteristic of the Australian bush landscape, and
likewise Australians have long retained a strong affinity with bush environments. There remains a
number of common factors which are associated with bushfire events and these include the
incidence of fire weather, availability of fuel along with its type, structure and continuity or
fragmentation, and development at urban / bushland interface.

Bushfire Attack
Bushfire attack refers to the various methods in which bushfire may impact upon life and property
and principally encompasses:

     •    Direct flame contact

     •    Ember and firebrand attack
