3 Sampling and Analysis
̶
3.1 Sampling Rationale
NEPM does not provide guidance regarding number of samples to be collected and sampling methods
for the assessment of marine sediments. On this basis, sample numbers and the sampling design
followed NAGD. Appendix D of the NAGD sets out the minimum number of sampling locations based
on the volume of potentially contaminated material to be dredged.
The sampling and analysis approach outlined below aims to characterise physical and chemical
characteristics of dredge material for the total dredge area (composite cores). This assumes at both
sites material is well mixed, from a highly active system, of recent deposition.
3.2 Number of Sampling Locations
Based on guidance provided in Appendix D of NAGD a total of 17 primary sites will be sampled at the
Spit and 6 primary sites at the River (site locations shown in Figure 3.1 and Figure 3.2). An additional 4
sites will be sampled in the proposed River dredge/placement area, to assist with physical
characterisation of the material (as works are adaptive rather than fixed).
The number of sample locations is based on the total dredge volume, as from an operational
perspective, all dredged areas will be treated as a single dredge unit.

River 5000 - 7000 Annual
Core lengths range between 0 to 3m for the Spit sites, and 0 to 2m at the River sites Table 3.2).
