                                                 BMT (OFFICIAL)

2 Methods

    ̶
2.1 Compliance with SAP and Guidelines
All sampling and analysis of sediments was undertaken in accordance with NAGD (Commonwealth of
Australia 2009) and NEPM (NEPC 2011). All sampling and analysis procedures followed the approach
outlined in the sampling and analysis plan (SAP). A copy of the SAP is provided in Annex A.

2.2 Sampling Timing
Sediment sampling was conducted on the 24th and 25th of January 2022. Sampling was undertaken
during daytime hours.

2.3 Sampling Locations
Sediment cores were collected at sites shown in Figure 2.1. Six primary sites (BH1 – BH6) were
sampled with an additional 4 sites (BH7-BH10) sampled in the proposed River dredge/placement area,
to assist with physical characterisation of the material (as works are adaptive rather than fixed). Cores
were collected with a vibro-coring sampler in accordance with the SAP and NAGD requirements. Cores
were subsampled into three horizons for contaminants analysis, as follows:

1. Horizon 1 (0.0m – 0.5m)
2. Horizon 2 (0.5m to 1.0m)
3. Horizon 3 (1.0m to maximum/refusal depth).
Cores were sub-sampled every 0.5 m for laboratory pH and ASS analysis up to the full core length, or
refusal, based on guidance on practical sampling resolutions from NAGD. Where core refusal was met
at depths less than the full dredge depth, the ASS results at the refusal point were assumed to be
representative of the remaining core length.

2.4 Additional Field QA/QC Samples
The following field and laboratory quality control samples were obtained:

• Field triplicate sample (additional core samples at two sampling location) to determine the small-
scale variability of the sediment’s physical and chemical characteristics. At the field triplicate sample
location, three separate cores were collected.
• Triplicate split sample at one location where sediments were thoroughly mixed and split into three
sample containers to assess laboratory variation, with one of the three samples sent to a second
        (reference) laboratory for analysis.
• One trip blank container per sampling day was filled with inert material (e.g. chromatographic sand)
and analysed concurrent with the analysis of volatile organic substances.
