1. Introduction
1.1 Brief
Treesafe Australia Pty Ltd has been engaged by Menzie Designer Homes to carry out a tree
inspection for the provisions of an Arborist Brief. The Arborist Brief shall include inspection notes
which identify the tree protection zones (TPZ) and the health and sustainability of three Red
Bloodwoods located on the council verge of No. 25 and No. 27 Dwyer Street Sunshine Beach.
TPZ calculations have been formulated in accordance with AS 4970 Protection of trees on
development sites.
1.2 Qualifications and Experience
The provisions of the Arborist Brief are based upon site observations from ground level and the
data captured onsite upon the day of assessment. The consulting arborist, Justin Harvey has
attained an AQF level 5 in Arboriculture (Diploma of Arboriculture AHC 50510).
2. Site Visit and Observations
2.1 Site Visits
The consulting arborist liaised with the property owner on site to discuss the re-alignment of the
proposed driveway access and the predicted impacts which the trees on the verge will sustain
from the proposed works.
A site inspection was carried out to collect data for the provisions of the Arborist Brief. The Arborist
Brief is based upon the evidence gathered at the time the assessment.
All tree inspections are performed from ground level without detailed investigation unless
otherwise noted within the assessment. The method of inspection performed was a basic level 2
visual tree assessment (VTA) as per ISA guidelines, ANSI A300 Standard for Risk assessment
and ISA’s Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment.

3. Inspection Results: A total of three trees have been identified along the council verge of No. 25 and No. 27 Dwyer Street. Tree No. 1 and tree No. 2 are situated on the council verge fronting 25 Dwyer Street with tree No. 3 situated on the verge fronting property No. 27. Tree No. 1 is a mature Red Bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera) with several over extended branch structures and deadwood Greater than (<) 50 mm in diameter. A co-dominant, first order branch on the Northern side of the tree over hangs the driveway and service wire to the house. The branch has poor taper with excessive end weight applying mechanical load force on a right-angle bend in the branch estimated at 1.5 meters from the stem bark ridge. A shear plane crack is evident as the result of this excessive mechanical load force. Kino* exudate is also evident around the wound area. Well-formed reaction wood is evident around a second shear plane crack on the dominant side of the tree to the south. The apical section of the canopy is displaying indications of die back perhaps resulting from canopy edge exposure and salt sheer from coastal prevailing winds to the south. Tree No. 2 is a semi-mature Red Bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera) with large to moderate deadwood throughout the canopy. This tree displays signs of poor vigour with a 10-20% live crown ratio. Indications of stress are evident with the presence of kino* exuding along the surface of the trunk in local areas. Several girdling roots have formed at ground level with a well-developed cavity extending beneath the soil level. Tree No. 3 is a semi-mature Red Bloodwood (Corymbia gummifera) with an 80% live crown ratio and minor deadwood. Large, exposed surface roots extend to the east and west from the root collar. Although this tree is situated outside the proposed development area, sensitive works methodologies should be considered to avoid damage to the root system, trunk, and branches of the tree whilst all earthworks and construction activities are carried out. Determining the Tree Protection Zone (TPZ): (Extract from AS 4970:2009) The radius of the TPZ is calculated by multiplying its DBH x 12. TPZ = DBH x 12 DBH = trunk diameter measured at 1.4 metres above ground. Radius is measured from the centre of the stem at ground level. Determining the Structural Root Zone (SRZ): SRZ radius = (D x 50)0.42 x 0.64 where D = trunk diameter, in metres, measured above the root buttress or Diameter Above Root Buttress (DARB). Tree No. DBH (mm) TPZ (M) DARB (mm) SRZ (M) 1 430 5.16 470 2.41 2 310 3.72 370 2.18 3 390 4.68 420 2.30 Table 2: TPZ and SRZ radius calculations. Arborist Brief– TSA: 25 Dwyer Street Sunshine Beach. 5. Conclusion:
Tree No. 1 requires extensive pruning work to remove all large dead sections within the canopy.
Various branch structures require end weight reduction including the co-dominant stem which
over hangs the driveway and service wire to 25 Dwyer Street. This stem is structurally
compromised and will require removal back beyond the shear plane crack to the stem bark ridge.
End weight reduction to reduce the load force on this fault is not practicable due to the formation
of the second order branch structures.
A considerable amount of pruning work is required for this tree. Branch end weight reduction
crown maintenance and the removal of the co-dominant stem will exceed the percentage of
annual pruning allowable within a growth season. It is of my professional opinion that this tree has
reached the final stages of its useful life expectancy within its urban setting.
Evidently tree No. 2 is presenting signs of poor vigour with a rapid decline in health and structure
This tree should be removed for safety reasons within 2 months.
Tree No. 3 should be retained and will require protection throughout the stages of the proposed
works. Refer to AS 4970, Tree Protection on Development Sites for tree protection methodologies
throughout the stages of construction.
6. Recommendations:
• Utilise sensitive earthworks methods to avoid damage to vegetation whilst removing
the existing concrete driveway.
• Employ a qualified arborist team AQF 3 or equivalent to carry out the removal of the
vegetation on the northern side of the existing driveway.
• Provide Supplementary plantings to compensate for vegetation loss.
• Refer to the development guidelines AS 4970 Protection of trees on development
sites.
• Refer to the guidelines of Noosa Shire Councils tree management principles.
• Employ a consulting arborist to oversee future excavation works around tree No. 3.
• Consider selecting species which are native and salt tolerant.

Appendix 1 - Explanatory Notes • Mathematical abbreviations: > = Greater than; < = Less than. • Measurements/estimates: All dimensions are estimates unless otherwise indicated. Measurements taken with a tape or clinometer are indicated with a ‘+’. Less reliable estimated dimensions are indicated with a '?'. • Species: The species identification is based on visual observations and the common English name of what the tree appeared to be is listed first, with the botanical name after in brackets. In some instances, it may be difficult to quickly and accurately identify a particular tree without further detailed investigations. Where there is some doubt of the precise species of tree, it is indicated with a '?' after the name in order to avoid delay in the production of the report. The botanical name is followed by the abbreviation sp if only the genus is known. The species listed for groups and hedges represent the main component and there may be other minor species not listed. • Height: Height is estimated to the nearest metre. • Spread: The maximum crown spread is visually estimated to the nearest metre from the furthest extent of live lateral branches on one side of the canopy to the tips of the live lateral branches on the opposing side of the canopy. • Diameter: These figures relate to 1.5m above ground level and are recorded in centimetres. If appropriate, diameter is measure with a diameter tape. ‘M’ indicates trees or shrubs with multiple stems. • Estimated Age: Age is estimated from visual indicators and it should only be taken as a provisional guide. Age estimates often need to be modified based on further information such as historical records or local knowledge. • Distance to Structures: This is estimated to the nearest metre and intended as an indication rather than a precise measurement. Frass: A sawdust like after effect from wood and bark chewing/boring insects. Shot Holing: A local area of absent leaf tissue caused by sap sucking or leaf chewing insects. Adventitious Roots: Commonly referred to palm tree root systems, a response caused by a reaction to oxygen. Tilth- The loosened effect of soil in the hole walls and floor. Epicormic growth: Stress shoots, water shoots, re-growth or suckers. Poorly attached, quick growing. Kino: Botanical gum or resin produced by various tree species including species of Eucalyptus. Adventitious shoots: A branch arising from a stem or parent branch having no connection to apical meristems. Arborist Brief– TSA: 25 Dwyer Street Sunshine Beach.
