Events play an important role in bringing people together to celebrate and promote cultural, community
and environmental values. Plainly events serve not only visitors who come to Noosa for specific events, but
they are also enjoyed by many local residents. Residents participate in their thousands in events such as
The Noosa Tri or the Noosa Alive! festival. And the lists above demonstrate that many public events are
aimed largely at locals, particularly those in the hinterland.
Responses:
In 2018 and 2019, Noosa Council responded to a range of concerns about events. This included issues about
public land being alienated from residents, road closures and their impacts, plus the concentration of events in
the high profile area of Main Beach.
Due also to continual pressure on Council to approve events on Noosa Main Beach, Council developed its
Noosa Main Beach Events Policy in 2018. This followed significant consultation with stakeholders and the
community. This policy caps the number and type of events that can be held on Noosa Main Beach, with the
aim of protecting this important asset for locals and visitors as well as minimising amenity impacts on Hastings
Street businesses, particularly resorts.
In 2019, again in consultation with stakeholders and the community, Council also developed a shire-wide
Events Policy. Put simply, this policy caps the number of events at their current level. It also establishes clear
benchmarks for quality and environmental outcomes. The policy notes that, “The day-to-day recreational use
of community land by residents and visitors will generally take precedence over events.”
